I went to view the above cars, First one i walked away after about 5 min as it had no service history and the mot advisors was a big long list. 2nd one looked ok but again i walked a way as there was a massive hole next to the lock in the door. So that makes it around 5 cars i have viewed now.

I have 4 more to view this weekend which are from local small car dealers

Easy repair if the car is cheap enough Wink

3 bolts & 1 connector plug for the door, change one in under 5 minutes once you find one in the correct colour & the door card is only 4 x torx 20 screws.

A loose cv gaiter, clean out & repack the joint with fresh grease & then resecure the gaiter.

Wouldnt worry about it.

Has the timing belt been changed?

what is it that's put you off the cars you've viewed? ten is a lot to walk away from!

i think your expectations are maybe too high? i understand you want a safe and reliable car for your wife.
however the 206 model is an old car now, and the ones you're looking at are fairly old also - will have seen a fair few miles and inevitably have wear & tear, paint imperfections and parts needing work/replaced (even the best maintained cars will always need worked on).

in your budget, consider looking more towards private. a lot of these indy garages are selling trade-ins or auction purchased cars with a premium on top. may as well save yourself that premium by buying private and putting the saving towards any necessary maintenance.

service history (garage stamps) isn't the be all and end all, although it looks good. if the seller has receipts for work then that's good enough for an old car. as others have mentioned, self servicing is common - i used to service my 206 using genuine filters and manufacturer specced oil.

if the car drives ok, looks clean, has no sign of serious damage, no oil leaks, good tyres, maintained close to schedule, no suspension clunks, no warning lights on dash, good tyres/exhaust, electrics & heaters work blah blah - i think is the best you can hope for when spending a grand.

Hi

Many thanks for the pointers, So is this 206 above that i have just posted for £1,550 a good price for the age if all is ok or how much would you try and knock the seller down.

I did call the garrage number which was on the MOT's from the old owner to ask if he had known the car and he said he did and that they did the service and MOT for it for the last few years.

I dont know why i am finding it so hard to get a 206

It lists ABS in the EBay description, I doubt it has it fitted.

This is one of the problems of Ebay automatically filling boxes in for sellers.

Went to have a look and the car was nothing like the listing, Lots of plastic trims hanging off around the outside of the car. Big dent in the rear side near wheel and it was nothing like it was in the pic. I asked if someone was intrested would he move on the price and he said no so i just left and walked out

I have noticed on both 206's i have looked at that there is always oil leak at the bottom of the belt. Where would this be from

under the car on the left side as you look from the front? Probably the crankshaft seal.

Just for abit of perspective, I bought my 206 4 1/2 years ago:

£2499
2002 (02)
Silver
5dr
1.4 8v GLX (electric windows,electric/heated mirrors,digital climate control,auto lights&wipers,6 disc cd changer)
52k miles
2 owners
Part history/receipts

So with today's prices, I would probs pay around £2000 for a similar car.

I've only ever had one problem with it, which was the gearbox. Managed to find a replacement for £40 and have it fitted for £80.

Insurance is low, economy is approx 30mpg around town. It can do around 500 miles per £60ish tank on a motorway run.

Tax is fairly low at £70 odd for 6 months.

Hope this helps somehow lol.

EDIT: car also had 6months tax and 12months MOT on it.
