Ive just been to my local tesco petrol station in my 1.4 glx which is only 3 miles away.
On the way there and back the temp gauge was just below 90 iirc.
When i got home i left the engine running for a couple of minutes while i cleaned the inside the windscreen.
I looked at the temp and it was around 95 degrees and alomst a few seconds later it shot up to the red and the dash was saying STOP.
It didnt seem to creep upto it just shot stright up!!!

Ive read a few other people with this issue but didnt know if their temps just shot up or crept up??
So whats there to look for or any suggestions?

It's probably not actually getting that hot, it's probably a faulty sensor. My 406's gauge moves about as it likes, one minute its cold, then its 70, then 90, then it says engine coolant temp too high, then goes off again.

Mine behaved like that when i got it - turned out the fan wasn't working due to corroded wires going into the relays in front of the rad.

With mine it was fine normally, sat at 90 on the temp gauge. But if i was stuck in traffic it would suddenly go into the red and flash STOP. I believe this is how plexed cars behave - the temp gauge doesn't creep up like pre-plexed systems.

Is your fan working?

Im not sure if the fan is working but I will have a look later after work,
I will also check the water levels to see what's what but yes maybe I need more coolant ( it's a high mileage car),
