Just bought a gti 180 and noticed steering is fairly heavy at low speeds, i know this is to be expected of this car but steering is quite noisy and whiney when the power steering is in use.
Also noticed a sort of burning smell, not like oil but possibly the p/s fluid, anyway topped up the reservoir but problem persists.
Could the p/s pump be faulty or maybe a leak or low pressure in the system? Where do I begin to look for a problem?

i would think if it was a leak you would see the fluid dripping down.
first thing i would do is change the fluid as most people never do this and then see what its like.
as you say they are heavy on the 180's but should not make a whinny noise.
also what is the belt like ??? could that be slipping ???

dont remember mine being noisy but was fairly heavy at times, i was considering removing the pump when i got the car as i dont like the weightless of steering on some cars but was actually quite a nice weight as it was,
i would point it to either i faulty pump or loose belt?

ok i'll check for leaks and belt in the morning, is the belt easily accessible, must be close to the ps reservoir i guess?

its not the best to get at mate but you should get to it it runs round the main pas pump and alternater.

they should make power steering work up to say 2k revs so when parking it on and when moving its not!
only in rallying i would say you need the power assisted as it makes tight handbrake turns easier

acces is abit tight, buts its far easier to get to than the timing belt

Must have a leak somewhere because topped fluid up yesterday and seems low again today.

Ever seen a rally car with PAS failure? They cant even keep it in a straight line because they cant make all the constant steering corrections.

During the 2006 world rally when Chris Atkinson damaged his power steering, he lost around 4 mins, as he couldn't turn the car in
