Right I will try to explain the problem.

It sounds like a hollow knocking sound somewhere behind the dash around the steering wheel / instrument panel area.

In terms of suspension issues. I am waiting to replace both track rod ends as the garage has checked all bearings suspension etc and these were the only faults found. Ns has play in it and os rubber has cracked and collapsed.

I have checked the comms unit and it is secure. I have checked under the dash the mfd surround the fuse box cover the pollen filter. It is not any of these things rattling or knocking.

The noise usually happens going over small pot holes in the road. But not every time?!?! Could I be hearing the track rod end echoing through the steering?

I am at a loss. Has any one got any ideas please?

Thanks

Ok just been out in the car. Had to nip into town. Didn't make the sound once! What is going on!!

Could it be my bonnet. When it is closed and I press it there is a similar sound and a small amount of play. Should the bonnet fit tight??

Buy an Alfa 147 or 156 and learn what suspension clunks, thumps, rattles and squeaks can really be like.

No you aren't. A knock shouldn't be there but they can be buggers to trace. Keep trying!

The big problem is that they are often easier to diagnose when you hear it yourself and the noise is usually tricky to describe accurately.

147 / 156
Front bottom wish bones knock.
Front top wishbones squeak.
Front anti roll bar knocks and is felt under your feet.
Front drop links knock but are quieter than bottom wishbione and easy to diagnose.
Rear transverse arms (4 off) fall apart and easy to see.
Rear drop links knock and easy to see.
Rear antiroll bars knock.
Almost no suspension component on these lasts more than 50k and most are 25 - 40k

Knocks drive you nuts - you will find it eventually.

The most annoying part is it is intermittent. When it does happen, it only happens on light bumps on the road. Steering does not replicate it. Bouncing the car does not replicate it. The garage have checked all suspension and wheel parts.......

Exhaust?
Spare wheel?

Engine mounting?
Wheel bearing?

Wheel bearings have been checked and are not the issue.

The spare wheel has been checked and is not loose.

The exhaust has only been on since oct. it has been checked and is still ok.

Battery??

Unsure how to check engine mountings?

Top mounts? I took my car to a garage. They jacked up the car and tried to check the mounts but seemed ok. But when they put the car back to the ground you could hear the clunk again. So they jacked it up again and pushed the wheel up so there was upwards force on the strut and only then could you see that the top mount had play in it. Sounds like the wrong way to check but got the job done

Had the same on mine. About 20k after doing the timing belt started to get a knock.
Just done timing belt again after 45k and top engine mount had unscrewed slightly.
It sounded exactly as though it was where you say your noise is and did the same disappearing routine.

As you leave actual rubber mount alone doing timing belt I never checked it first time around. Locktited in place now!

Mines a hdi but I suspect it to be similar

Look at left hand side of engine and you will see a piece of ally sticking out and meeting the inner wing. It's a pain as you have to remove the alloy part of the mount to get at the rubber. Which looks like an old British Leyland gearbox mount on steroids!
