I was driving at 65 down the motorway for 2.5 hours. I hit the slip road, stopped then pulled off hit 55 engine died. Slight loss of power then stalled. Pulled over, tried starting.
Sounds like its mis firing running on 2-3 cylinders with a cluncking noise coming from right side of the engine. Sounds like a piston hitting a valve type of sound. Increases as you rev up and decreases when you rev down. Its more than a tap, something is really making contact.
There is no smoke in any way.
Is it possible that the cam belt has slipped? If so how can I check this? Any other ideas?

It could of slipped, is it hard to start? You would only be able to check if you remove the cover and have a look to see if everything lines up

sounds like your cambelt slipped to check you can line up the timing slots for both cam and crank shafts but first you can try turning over the engine by hand off the crankshaft bolt if you meet stiffness check the timing slots
it could also be coilpack or sparkplug petrol engine or injector fault if diesel engine

The car is on the way to Luton now, so I won't get my hands on it until Monday. I will try the above, the car does start but misfires, and you can hear the knocking noise I presume that would be piston and valve contact. What are the chances if the belt is replaced and timing redone the engine will not need a rebuild?
