Hey,

When I accelerate it sounds like the engine is struggling and sometimes when I get to around 4,000 revs the car just judders and the car stops accelerating for a while.
Today, during the period when it stopped accelerating, when I pumped the accelerator I could hear a kind of suction noise.

Not sure if it is related but the revs hang when I rev it slightly.

I have already cleaned out the hoses, egr valve and map sensor. Is there anything else I should check? There is no fault codes showing but I have a feeling it could be the injectors?

What is the need to do 4000 revs? Wow that is high unless you are on a racing track.
Whats it like when you do 3000 revs, and change to higher gear.
From what you are saying, the higher gear is not taking it, and struggleing with power.
Wonder if the timing is out.

Might of exaggerated slightly, maybe more like just over 3,000. The throttle seems unresponsive and when I change to 5th gear the car barely accelerates. The engine sounds like it is running on 3 cylinders when I accelerate but I am pretty sure it's not as when it idles it seems smooth.
How can I further examine the timing?

I would suggest fuel starvation rather than a timing issue.
change fuel filter maybe?
does it do this in every gear and when stood if you rev high?
I dont consider 4000 to be excessive when red line doesnt start til 6000+,its neccessary when pulling away quickly or on a motorway, dual carriageway.

Well today I got a p0170 fault code which (correct me if I am wrong) I think is related to the injectors so I think you could be right. Is there anyway to test the injectors?
When I rev high it seems fine. Doesn't sound right when accelerating but the only time it starts shuddering is when I accelerate hard in 5th gear.

So revving high in 5th will be approaching the cars top end speed which is when the shuddering starts so...this might be a wheel balance/allignment problem?

Best to get the wheel allignment checked, and go to a place that uses the four wheel allignment as that is more accurate.
Get the allignment done before you can move on having eliminated the current most probable cause.

If the car is shuddering under hard acceleration in 5th gear only how can this be a wheel alignment issue? Does he not have wheels in the other gears then?

Well if its only a slight mis-allignment it wont show itself until the car reaches the higher speeds. This often happens ,also wheel balancing may need checking as this does the same thing if its only a small mis-balance.

Would you recommend something else tkfan?

Thanks for the reply but wheel alignment is not the problem. It is a problem with the engine, and not around the top end, anything above 55 mph makes the shuddering start.

The fault relates to a counter fueling issue so I think it is either the MAP sensor or the injectors but I have no idea how to check them.

Or the fuel filter. Is it easy to change the fuel filter on the KFU engine? I have heard it is a nightmare.

Deffinately sounds engine related. If you are unsure how and what to check, your best bet is to take it to a garage or a friend tha knows what they are doing? I have very little knowledge myself. Luckily my neighbour knows so much and is always willing to help. Smile

It could be fuel / air related? Spark plugs? Coil pack? Timing? Faulty sensor etc etc.

Yeah I think the juddering is actually misfiring. I checked all the injectors there (what a nightmare that was) and they seem fine and clean. I can only assume it is the MAP sensor now. It is very hard to know for sure though.

Correct me if im wrong guys but its possible to test the injectors output using the collection bottles method?

Basically a good garage may have the tool(im unsure if its only for diesels tho?)...this consists of four small clear plastic bottles that each hooks up to each injector individualy by four small plastic tubes each connecting to its own injector.1,2,3,or4 and as the engine is run on tick over each injector will fill each bottle showing the performance of each individual injector according to the amount of fuel collected in a given time...

Each injector should fill each bottle at approximately the same rate with a small tolerance given but if one or more injectors is faulty it will not fill its relevant bottle at the same rate as the others proving itself to be faulty or certainly uñer performing and letting you know which injector requires attention.

These kits are slightly specialized but if you go to a good tool supplier you should pick a set up cheaply enuf...after all its only four little plastic bottles and four small tubes to connect to.
GOOD LUCK!

Air leak on inlet side? Are all inlet hoses properly attached and no holes or other leaks? Inlet gasket leaking? I would also do a compression test just to be sure there isn't a bigger problem.
