Hi I've just recently got my 206 and have noticed this whirring sound from the engine, it's not that loud but noticeable. However if I press the clutch down the noise stops. The noise is there at idle whilst running any gear just stops when the clutch is down. Is it normal or could it be a throw out bearing? Any ideas? Cheers

I know its very unlikely but Is there anyway of knowing its the bearing other than going through the pain of taking the clutch out?

Yeah thats exactly it. just checked everything that I can with limited space and knowledge..so leaning towards taking it in for a new clutch then as I don't fancy doing it myself parked on the side of the road.

How is the gearbox oil level, and condition, worth elimanting a few cheap avenues before forking out on the clutch like you said.
How is the noise if you free wheel the car down a hill in neutral, does it get louder, or go, or no difference.

Checked all box oil and was new about 6 months ago. The noise is constant whatever I do, higher gears is slightly less but could be the engine sound shadowing it. Rolling around in neutral is no difference. Only thing that alters the noise is when the clutch is pressed.

Little update

Took it to a clutch specialist today and its not the clutch. It's the gearbox bearings, previous owners must have driven resting their left foot on the clutch. It's not detrimental but I will need a new box at some point. Probably look for a 1.3 rallye box, if I need to replace it might as well replace it with better.

Gearbox bearing?

I would go to another garage and get that checked...the thrust bearing dries up and starts to squeal,.When mine came out the bearings felt rough as they span.

Just shows how many people jump to the conclusion and say clutch.

I would ask for a second opinion. Not saying the clutch specialist is wrong but I am struggling with that. OK resting foot on clutch transfers load to gearbox but usually causes the thrust bearing or pressure plate springs (fingers) to wear before causing gearbox problem.

I've had 4 opinions now and one garage said it was the clutch but listened to it for 2 seconds and acted really dodgy like just wanted my money..the others all say it is the gearbox most likely the input shaft bearing. The main indicator is the clutch bearings 99% of the time will still make a noise when the clutch is pushed down. When the clutch is pressed and the noise disappears, as well as no real noticeable gear problems (when driving) points to the gearbox shaft. Anyhow the noise is Bearly there so the radio will just be turned up until it gets so loud I need to get a new box.
