Sorry but how would I do a compression test and what will it show?

A garage can do the test. I believe pug would do it as part of the free health check service. I also believe it would show issues with head gasket leaks etc...

Does anyone know where the fuel filter would be for that matter? It's a 2005 1.4 16v Quicksilver. I can't find the filter Sad

Cheers. Damn it then, I have no idea what's wrong with my car then. It was seizing to accelerate the other day and would only run ok if I stopped the car and gave it a good rev, then it stunk of fuel and the performance was crap. Seemed to point to a fuel filter problem. Stumped now.

It sounds like you are out of your depth so my recommendation is take it to a garage.

However, stinking of fuel is either unburnt fuel from the exhaust or a leak. Have a real good look around the engine bay fuel pipes and joints for leaks. Also put it on ramps or an axle stands and look closely for fuel leaks. You won't necessarily see drips on the ground because it may be evaporating fast.

For anyone who is interested, the problem was the Catalytic Converter. £50 from eBay and the car runs like new.

Thank you. So few people update a thread with the final solution.
