Hi Guys,

New to the forum but been tinkering with cars for years now. Always thought about build threads, but I'm too keen to get on the spanners and photos is always an after thought so this will be my 1st. No crazy plans for the Pug just a few subtle tweaks here and there, no big bore exhaust's or aeroplane wing spoilers here I'm afraid Laughing

A couple of my more memorable cars for starters -

The 1st car i properly messed with a BMW 328i, m50 manifold, BBTB, massive induction kit, exhausts etc etc

MR2 Roadster, probably one of the most fun cars iv ever owned, even if i did look like a hairdresser Embarassed

Rav4 D4D, Great fun in the snow

BMW 320D M-Sport, Always regretted not getting the 330D but a great car all the same

A4 quattro 1.8t Sport, fantastic car, spent a small fortune getting from the standard 150BHP to a more respectable 218BHP. Bigger turbo, bigger injectors, front mount intercooler, straight through exhaust Lightweight Flywheel, Fast road clutch. The list goes on, i only recently sold this and often wonder why Rolling Eyes

iv had countless other motors along the way including a couple of imprezas, i also got to use my brothers 380BHP Escort Cosworth for 6 months whilst he was banned not so long ago, the day he took the keys back was a very sad day Crying or Very sad

And that brings me to my latest acquisition, a tidy unmolested 206 GTI -

Plans include -

Coil-overs (purchased) (complete)
Adjust torsion bars (complete)
SP Arches (purchased) (complete)
180 Spoiler (Purchased) (complete)
Remove aerial (complete)
Ecosse Quickshift
Alloys Refurbed (thinking white???) now looking for a set of vortex
New Rubber as not one tyre matches at the mo *Censored*
A few exhaust tweaks (janspeed back box and race pipe fit) tubular manifold on its way soon
A few intake tweaks (simota induction kit fit) 180 manifold on its way soon
Uprated brakes (purchased)
A good blast with the rotary polisher
And a good service including timing belt as there's no record of it being done in the history and its fast approaching 100k Shocked
Masked headlights (Complete)
Few bits of colour coding (Complete)

I'm a mechanical engineer/fabricator by trade and have a well kitted out garage come workshop in the garden so ill be doing all the work myself.

Where the magic happens Laughing

Alongside the Pug I'm also in the middle of dropping a bike engine into a road legal buggy, although progress has halted a bit recently due to work I'm hoping to have it ready for some summer fun!!

So that's me guys, ill try my best to keep the thread updated as i go, and I'll hopefully be able to share some of my experience on what seems like a fantastic forum!!

Welcome to 206info mate, you got a very nice collection of cars through the time, the Audi A4 is amazing :),but you got the 206 now,and it's a great car as far as I seen, the interior in good condition, but the headlights been replaced,as they are Crystals, while you got phase 1 tail lights, but still cars looks great,so you can add to the list Phase 2 tail lights, this way you make the rear end stands along with mods list you got :).
I like your garage with all the tools :D,it's a good start to replace the timing belt :),hope you will keep this updated.

So i finally get an afternoon off and decide to tackle the suspension. Get the car on axle stands go to remove the rear wheels....... Locking wheel nuts!!! pretty standard i thought, the key will be in the glove box or in with the jack. OH DEAR!! half an hour i searched to no avail. So i then decide to try a few other methods i know of. Laser locking wheel nut removers.... FAIL!! Irwin damaged bolt grips.... FAIL!! Stud extractors.... FAIL!! and finally one of them American Gaitor Grip sockets and guess what.... Fail!! Wall Bang Time to break out the big guns then. The welder came out along with some drilled out M12 nuts and 20 mins later all 4 wheel nuts were smoking on the ground Thumbs Up The wheels are going for powder ccoating soon anyways so i wasnt too concered about a bit of weld spatter, but gave them a good squirt of anti spatter anyway.

The wheel nuts in question

The drilled out nuts

Success!!!

By the time id finished messing about my young lad had returned home from nursery so the suspension will have to wait, at least i got to play with my toys for an hour or 2 anyway Very Happy

Got a bit of free time Sunday morning so cracked on fitting the 180 spoiler and sp arches. I know there's a few how to's kicking about for fitting the spoiler but i sort of came up with my own method.....

I started by chopping the head of 4 m6 x 16mm bolts (or maybe m5 Rolling Eyes ) and winding them into the holes so just the tips were poking out. Some m6 grubscrews would be ideal but i didnt have any to hand. I also removed the little black clips behind where i was about to drill.

Not the clearest of picture but you get the jist hopefully.

I then carefully put the spoiler into position and applied a bit of pressure either end, which left me with four nice marks in my not so shiney paintwork to drill to.

Again not the clearest picture but you can make out the marks (the one to the left has already been piloted)

It was then a case of removing the cut down bolts, deburring the holes, adding a dab of hammerite to prevent any corrosion and bolting it in place using loctite. The arches were fixed into position using black panhead screws, which is probably a bit pikey but they do the job and are pretty much unnoticeable against the black paintwork and arch liners.

The finished product.

Not sure I'm a fan of the arches now they're on the car but I'm hoping once iv lowered it and fit spacers they might look a bit better. Planning on lowering about 35mm running 20mm spacers and standard 16" nimrods, im pretty sure this wont cause any rubbing issues but any feedback from anyone running a similar set-up would be gratefully received. I also now cant open the boot fully as the spoiler catches on the ariel DOH!!! so looks like a stubby beesting will be in order.

Had another stab at the suspension today, job was going nice and easy, got the rear shocks and eccentric washes out no problem. Got to the torsion bars and they just wouldn't move. I tried a few of the different methods iv heard of, slide hammer, the socket method, and also just plain beating on them with a lump hammer and drift for about 2 hours and not even a mm of movement. I even nipped out and bought a little pneumatic chisel/hammer in the hope that the vibration might help get it moving, but nothing. I was a bit reluctant to start using heat because of the nature of the material they're made from but everything got several good blast of plusgas which normally never fails. Frustrated and cold i gave up about 4 hours into the job with the car still on axle stands. Going to stop at the diy shop on the way home tomorrow and buy a 4.5kg sledge hammer Twisted Evil I wont be defeated Laughing

To cheer myself up a bit later I swapped the internals over from the old battered key into a shiny new flip key that I had cut the other day. The blade required a bit of extra fettling when I got home to get it turning nice in the locks but it was definitely 5 mins well spent

Just a small update,
With lots of swearing and a few sore fingers from poorly aimed hammer swings I finally managed to get the torsion bars out and adjusted Thumbs Up Gave everything a good clean and got it all back together with new dampers and copious amounts of copper slip. it's a bit lower than I was aiming for but I reckon I could adjust them in no more than an hour now that everythings moving freely. Also managed to pick up a nice carbon fibre simota induction kit that was a 5 min bolt on affair.

Got a couple of days off next week so I'll be getting stuck in with the pug-

Coilovers to fit
Readjust torsion bars
Tidy up rear end, thinking maybe dewiper??
Got a centre silencer delete pipe to fit, while iv got the exhaust in bits I want to tweak the backbox a bit as it doesn't seem to sit right at the minute.
A few bits of paint here and there.
And if time permits i'll be doing the timing belt and maybe the clutch.

I'm not using the car for another month or 2 yet, as I have a little 4x4 I plod about in through the winter, so I'm not too fussed if it's on axle stands for a couple of weeks.

cracking on nicely with this, will be keeping an eye out for updates, love the garage wish i had the space for something like that im stuck out in all the elements lol, 100k miles aint that high for the gti ive seen them in the 130k mark without issues, when doing the timing are you changing the water pump??

if you want it to sound nice and keep standard exhaust (minus silencer as you mentioned) get a anifold fitted give a good gain and would be easy for you to fit just need to remove the subframe

welcome

Yea I'll deffo be doing the water pump, be stupid not to. I learned the hard way on my old a4, about a month after I did the belt the pump failed and I had it in bits again. Not sure about a manifold at the minute, haven't got the money for anything decent and iv had cheapo eBay tubulars crack in the past. Can you recommend a good one at a reasonable price? Been toying with the idea of a few 180 bits, intake and exhaust manifolds mostly. I know the intake will fit with a bit of tweaking and give decent gains but I'm not sure about the exhaus, or if it would even be worth it?

The exhaust manifold makes a good improvement over standard but requires the cat to be cut and flange welded on l. The one I have is less than 200 on ebay atm called race land and haven't caused me any issues in 5 years. The inlet fits fine with an adaptor plate for the throttle body which someone on here has made up to sell and has done a guide for the swap but I would say you will need a remap after

Iv got access to a laser cutter at work so I'll more than likely be making my own adapter plate. Don't mind a bit of chopping and welding of the exhaust either. Just bought a tig setup that iv been itching to use on something other than scrap Very Happy I'll deffo be giving the car to my mate to play with the map at some point too but I'll be holding off on that for now until I decide where I'm heading with the engine mods. Cheers for the heads up on the exhaust manifold I'll look into it. Do you know if the 180 exhaust manifold fits if so is it worthwhile?

Yeah the 180 fits but this it catches on the linkages not 100% on that. Think the pipe is smaller tho so can't see much improvement.

So my 2 days off came and went, didn't get nearly as much done as I was planning due to the glorious British weather but got the centre pipe fitted, was pretty straight forward and took about an hour including a trip to a local motor factors for some new exhaust rubbers. Also tweeked the back box a bit because for some reason the tailpipe was sat funny. Nothing 20 minutes with an angle grinder and welder couldn't sort Very Happy

Got the coilys fit as well, again pretty straight forward. Managed to do it with the the control arms in place using a set of old cut down spring clamps to compress the springs in situ. The Top mount bearings fell to bits in my hands so another trip to the motor factors for some shiney new skf top mounts. Took about 3 hours which was just as well as the weather took a turn for the worse.

Spent the rest of my weekend doing a bit of painting, including a phase 2 bootstrip I bought of a member on here. Also did one of the sp arches, again from a member on here, that arrived in a disgusting state. I won't name and shame but I wasn't happy at all when they turned up, and was even less happy with the attitude of the seller. In a moment of madness I also painted the front badge but it looks hideous and will be getting replaced at the 1st opportunity.

only took a few pictures here and there, I'll upload them later
