Drove car home from work Friday afternoon - absolutely normal. Parked in neutral w/ handbrake on.
During the weekend it has rained and turned to a bit of snow Sunday afternoon/evening. Temperatures dropped to about -10C during the night to Monday.
As I was to take off for work this morning the car started normally, clutch pedal felt fully normal, no unusual sounds. Stepped out to clear the windows from frost and the engine to warm up.
As I were to back out of the parking space I couldn't get the car in reverse - I can't get _any_ gear. The stick moves normally (in neutral) from side to side, but will only move a few millimeters forwards/backwards, stopping with a metal on metal sound.
No odd noises and clutch pedal feels normal.
Currently trying to apply some heat in the engine compartment in the [probably vain] hope that something has merely frozen and that it can be thawed out... but it has seen lower temperatures previous winters, combined with lots of slush.
But I'd like to pick the brain of the board and see if anyone has experienced anything similar and/or has any ideas. The car is an early 2004 RC (GTI180) with 72000 km on it. Has never had (owned since new) any issues with the gearbox previously.

The gear cables have seized. New ones are required

Frozen looks to have been the case - temperature is now up to about -2C and that in combination with some added warm air and some wiggling has made it so that gears can be selected, though still with some resistance.
Tomorrow's forecast indicates a couple of degrees above 0, at least in the afternoon. That, some added heat and then taking it up to proper working temperature for a while might clear it for now.
So what do you guys think, water penetration of the cables or something else? If something else I'd have expected to see it before - given the lovely climate I have here - but degradation of the 'outer' of the cables over time seems reasonable.
It's scheduled for service end of next week, so I'll have them take a look at the cables too. Any idea on cost (it'd be rough as I'm not in the UK) for replacement (Peugeot shop)?

I dread to think. Its very common on bippers, rust builds up and then one day you can select gears

Well for it's age and mileage,I would say the cables are gone worn out,so have a look (garage) and replace them, don't think they will be expensive even in Sweden
