having rough stating from cold or very short distance (eg to fill up with petrol at nearby garage) then take ages to start again, just turns over. occasionally stone cold struggles too.

it is due a oil change and thats happening next weekend (with new fuel filter) sparks were changed less than 2000miles ago. (bosh super4)

What spark plugs did you have before?
Some folks have problems with Super 4's and get along better with the NGK even though some prefer to avoid them like the plague.

Well doubt it's the Super 4's then.
Sounds like you're planning a little self service? If it continues after then get it hooked up to a code reader would be best option just to make sure.
Is the engine management light flashing up at any point?

Don't really want to stab in the dark but for what it's worth..
Battery on it's last legs?
Could check the throttle body to make sure the stepper motor isn't sticking?
Temp sensor or crank position sensor?
Don't suppose you've been keeping an eye on how it's been doing on fuel economy recently, any lumpy revving?
