Hi all,
I've recently inherited a 1.4 petrol 206, 70k miles. I'm not sure if this is normal for these cars, but the engine temperature when in traffic (slow, stop start) and hovers between 90 and 100 degrees. Once I can drive fast again it stays below the 90 mark.
I thought thermostats were meant to kick in at 90 so I'm surprised it gets above this mark.
Is there a problem or is this expected behaviour? the bonet of the car is scorching hot to touch when I stop after a run.
cheers!

Not had that specific car but pretty sure every car I've owned sits around the 90 mark, sure someone with experience will be along shortly...
Though I don't think I've ever had a bonnet hot to the touch though...

Is your radiator cooling fan working (spinning) when reaching above 90 degrees, has it got aircon?
Has the vehicles coolant been changed recently, (airlock)
These are the things to check first, before going onto sensors and blocked radiators etc.
And yes your temperature will reduce when going at a faster speed, wind at the front of the car

I think the radiator fan is working (it was last year when someone else was driving it - I'll check, I didn't hear it this morning but that's not to say it's not working with all the traffic I was sat in!). It's got aircon but doesn't work (probably needs regassing).
The coolant hasn't been changed for at least 2 years. Perhaps I should check water level in case it's not got enough

I have a 1.4 90c at running speed. 90-95/100 fan kicks in drops back to 90c.

That's similar to mine then, but are you able to put your hand on your bonet for more than a few seconds or is it not that hot?
thanks

Provided it isn't going much above 100 when the fan kicks in what you describe is normal operation.
To test it take the car for a drive (5 miles should suffice) then park and let it idle. Watch the temp gauge going up and wait for the fan to kick in. If it gets near 110 deg then there is definitely a problem with fan control. If the fan kicks in and temp drops quite quickly then you have normal operation.
Watch and listen carefully for the fan, it is two speed and the low speed running that comes in first is quite quiet and easy to miss.
Don't let the car overheat when doing this or you might cause head gasket failure.

Well i watched the temp guage after a run when and it was ticking over, went up to 100 but then dropped back down to 90, so I assume it is regulating itself properly.
It is concerning though that you can probably fry an egg on the bonnet!

Seeing that it has 70,000 miles on the clock, check the 2 relays housed in a black plastic box, left and down to the radiator, these tend to get gunged up and fail, (test and clean up), and the resister housed in a metal box at the bottom of the radiator.
These relays and resistor operate the slow and fast speed radiator fan.

I haven't ever put my hand on the bonnet of a 206 so no idea what they normally feel like but what you describes sounds like normal operation. You don't have a cooling problem.
Does the 206 normally have sound deadening felt under the bonnet (I don't recall.) If it should have some, is it still there as it would also act as an insulator and keep the bonnet cool.

Yes you're right there is no felt under the bonnet. I think it'll be fine and if it's not the car will soon warn me to stop!
thanks for your comments

My car started with this issue, then after a couple of months has gotten worse and worse. Apparently my cooling fan is going into 'limp mode' so it's taking longer for the fan to kick in than it normally should. Mine now sits at less than 70 then if it is idle it will go up to 100 and with any heatng on it will shoot right up to the top temp and glide back down with my stop warning light on. Anyone got any advice? I can't afford a garage.

Do as kandlbarrett said and check the 2 sensors first

onTook mine to a garage in the end. Was told it was cooling fan sensor as you said so had it fixed. Car went nuts at 3am this morning driving home (2 weeks after I've had the sensor fixed). Just a normal drive it does on a daily basis. Temp went right up to the max and even when engine was off with keys in my pocket the fan was going nuts for 10 mins! Don't think people trying to sleep nearby were too impressed as it wasn't quiet at all. RAC coming to look at it now so might have an answer of what else to try.

Sounds like above problem is due to lack of coolant or air lock leading to. Damage caused could be minimal or extensive. Sounds like it got pretty warm.
As for the op, I'd say 100 is fine. The point of a modern pressurised coolant system is to run an artificial hotter temperature that won't boil creating air in the system. My hdi 1.4 sits at 85 all day but on occasion gets to about 100 and fan kicks in. Probably actually 98 degree fan switch but you're never going to see two degrees on a production car gauge.
