I bought my 1999 GTI with no history of when the timing belt had last been done.. The car's done 120k miles and I know the belt need replacing every 80k... So I'm thinking it's only done 40k but just to be sure I'm gonna replace it anyway.. So, how much is the average cost of fitting a complete timing kit? I've been quoted £400-£600 because my mechanic said they don't know what they may encounter when stripping it down due to the age of my car and because it's a big engine in a small car it's awkward to get access to change it all so there's a lot of work needed to go in to replace everything.

Is this a fair price?
Bearing in mind the garage are replacing more than just the timing belt.

I haven't done a gti but I think that is quite expensive, you should ring around local garages and dealers to compare prices

Be worth asking a Peugeot / Citroen main dealer for a quote, sometime's they can very competitive on simple jobs like this.

I changed the cambelt on our CC which is the same engine (138bhp). Yes, space is tight but it's no worse than a lot of cars (at least you can do it with the engine still in!). Your garage's comments sound more like " we don't really want to do it as we know Pugs are a PITA" but he doesn't want to put you off coming back ... We had no idea of the history of our car but it had done just under 56k miles and wasn't likely to have had a new cambelt ... receipts were provided, but not many. As it was just over ten years old, I replaced it under the age category ...

I didn't use an special tools .. you need to pin the crank and cam wheels but you can do that with the right sized bolts!

Make sure you get a new water pump fitted at same time, so include new coolant in price, as a complete cambelt kit with new idler and tensioner. You will probably need a new auxiliary belt too.

£400-600 sounds steep ... see if there are any Peugeot or Citroen specialists in your area and as
Mr BSI says, try your dealer as they can often have servicing deals.

Down to just the 1.4 HDi. Cayman Green 2.0i CC sold.

Thanks guys, luckily there's a Peugeot dealer/garage 15 minutes from my house so I'll have a chat to them about prices Smile

I wouldn't even bother with the main dealer.

They can sometimes be very cheap when they need to train the apprentice up on antiques Wink

I had mine done at the dealer in december because they were the cheapest around. £295 not including water pump. Or £345 if you opt for genuine Pug parts

Deals still on the pug uk website here:

Watch out for the FREE health check the dealer will do that will find plenty of extra work recommended to be carried out Laughing

onHaha, yeah!

There's a few other bits that need sorting so this free health check may come in handy! I know I have a PAS leak and there's some small oil leak from the engine but the source of that is unknown!
