Any help with the following problem would be gratefully received.
Just purchased a 2003 one elderly owner 1.4HDI, with 40K on the clock. Has a fully comprehensive service history and 12 months MOT.
Everything is great and feels like a new car to drive, but ……………
There's no aircon. The clutch does not kick in on the pump even though the aircon green bulb lights up when the button is pressed in. I'm not anxious to get it gassed up in the hope the pump will then operate if that is not the problem.
Any suggestions as to what I should check before I commit it to an air con specialist? Also I cannot get my fat hand down to see if the pump has a 3 or 4 bolt mounting if it should need a replacement. Thanks for any advice.
I should add I have NO connection to the member who had problems some time ago and seemed to ignore what advice was offered then !!

You need to check the gas pressure in the system first.
The pressure safety switch will disable the aircon system if the gas pressure is to high or to low.
It most likely does just want re gassing.

Took the car in today and the operator told me that the system would not hold a vacuum for the required 15 minutes so they did not re-gas it.
Without the re-gas they could not tell me where the leak was so I shall fit some new seals to see whether that improves things. I've looked at the condenser and that appears OK but of course I could be wrong.
They were very good at the garage though and made no charge.

The system should be charged with an inert gas like nitrogen to pin point the leak.
