Hi wondering if anyone can help on this please.

Peugeot 206 1.4 hdi eco 2003 plate

Following was replaced

Thermostat with sensor & Coolent
Oil filter & oil
Crank pulley as the old one was making a noise
Centre exhaust section
Earth strap going to gearbox & chassis was also sanded & cleaned
Glow plug relay had 2 wires that looked poor so also cleaned these

Since the above was done I have noticed the car when hot takes a little longer to start but always starts the first time. When engine is cold I have to crank it for alot longer & approx 4/5 times to get it started.

I have had a quick look for any leaks but can't seem to find anything. I have also tried to pump the priming bulb however this does not go hard and also has air in the clear pipe. Any ideas what could be causing this issue?

The self-primer never goes hard and I've always had air bubbles in the pipes .. that isn't your issue.

The glow plugs on the 1.4hdi don't work like the older style .. the glow plug light doesn't come on .. when mine did it was the start of the relay failing!

You didn't touch or move the crank sensor when you swapped out the pulley?

Have you put the car on PP2000? Until you read any error codes you are searching in the dark.

I didn't touch or remove the crank sensor old pulley was removed & new one fitted. Currently there is no codes stored. A few days before I got the following codes

P0704 fault code undefined please please refer to the handbook. Looking online this is the clutch switch
P0118 Engine Coolent temperature signal short circuit to earth

These were erased & since not come back

What was used to read the codes? I've found differing results with off the shelf code readers and Peugeots ..


It's the same with Renault. My son's Clio broke down .. AA man said it was the high pressure fuel pump and he towed it home. It was glow plugs on my code reader (Renault compatible). I swapped out two dead glow plugs (tested the old fashioned way with a multi-meter) and the relay and Voilá .. working Renault.

Down to just the 1.4 HDi. Cayman Green 2.0i CC sold.

Autel maxidas. Noticed when the car is parked on a slope front of car facing down car fires up first time if parked on a slope opposite way it takes longer to start. Last couple of times its fired up then cut out cranking it a few more times gets it running again.

This problem has only started happening since fitting the above parts prior to this I had no issues.

Well out of those the temp sender and glow plug relay can be the only ones really to affect the starting.

There are different temp sensors, so it might be worth checking it is the right one (I think ours is pale green in colour) and that the connection is good. If it isn't registering properly it will fool the ecu into thinking the engine is the wrong temp and under/over fuelling.


The crank pulley shouldn't be a problem unless, as I suggested before, the crank sensor has been touched. I think that works using a magnetic sensor to pick up a gap in the pulleys which in turn senses the engine timing.


Otherwise something else has been disturbed .. but what that could be is anyone's guess.

Thank you for the input I will get a replacement glow plug relay. The temp sensor is the one in the thermostat housing? If so this was replaced with a new one come supplied with the thermostat & housing unless there is another sensor?

Also sometimes when it starts it will run for about 10 seconds but then cuts out again. As I mentioned above parking on a hill makes a difference I was wrong it has this issue regardless.
