#1: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Nimminz, Location: Durham, NE England, UKPosted: Wed Jun 30, 2010 8:24 am ---- This is my project thread for my second car. First part copied off the volvo forum.
25/06/10
This is a 1988 Volvo 360 GLT 2L Manual
At the moment it has about 46K on the clock, few dinks, dints and bits of rust.
Been driven by an elderly lady for the last 16 years and hasn't seen rain, snow or even the night. Just the inside of her garage and the outdoors for half an hour every week.
Just passed MOT, for at least the 2nd year in the row with no advisories, day before yesterday.
Everything works AFAIK bar 1 heated seat.
Anyway, a few pics, all but the first are phone quality and i do apologise.
First one is off the big camera and has been touched up.
Thanks for looking!
Matt

Free is the way
1. Fitted the Volvo Fire extinguisher in an alcove in boot
2. Did some polishing in the engine bay (40% complete)
Before...
After...
3. Re-did the paint on the speaker grilles:
Before...
After...
4. Re did the paint on the black part of the grilles behind the door
5. Painted the bonnet grille / scuttle in satin black rather than the faded grey it had become.
before...
after...
6. Also gave the wiper motor cover a lick of paint, satin black because thats the only tin I have
I really enjoy driving it. Got used to the brakes and clutch and prefer them to my Peugeot now.
Cheers for the comments
Thanks for looking

Nothing done today, put another 70 miles on the clock
Did find an old (80s? earlier) 'Astrali' Steering wheel that looks like it will fit straight on. looks just like this but with a black plastic centre cap:
I got this for the bargain price of a fiver of a friend who wrote off her toyota yaris a couple of weeks ago. Looks pretty terrible:
So decided I'd get the satin black spray out and 'fix' it
Much better I know it's not neat but will probably be getting something different on thursday. Final plan is to mount it in the glovebox and put the standard one back in the centre console.
My wicked removal keys :
Pop rivets
And my wiring:
Wrapped the volvo plug up in insulation to stop any of my plugs coming out. If it had been a rotten car that wasn't so mint I'd have cut the wires but I'm not cutting/breaking/damaging any original bits
Fitted :
Came with my mates CD still in
Only problem is it sits out by an inch or two, think its all the wiring, I'll sort it tomorrow. Connected the amp remote wire to the 'power aerial' wire, hope its 12v constant. And the RCAs, just got to run each down seperate sides of the car. Any tips to hide the wires? I took the plates from besides the door frame out (ones that hold the carpet down) and tried fitting it under but no luck. Maybe run it along the floor under the carpet, bigger job though.
Also got to get a big piece of MDF for the bot floor as the carpet stuff is sagging in the middle where the wheel well is. Then I can bolt the sub to the false floor to stop it moving about. Fits lovely in the Passenger side alcove though. I have a 12v Socket in the boot pillar, just below where the parcel shelf is. Previous owner put it there to charge the battery easier. Think I'll be wiring the sub power cables into that, so i don't disturb orig. wiring
2. Pirelli sticker I know its a tad chavvy but its hardlys visible and semi covers the mank off the exhaust.
Wanted to finish polishing the Volvo on the engine cover but the rain put me off. Also found my boot lifters are knackered
Ah well, another update tomorrow...
29/06/10
Daily update
Today I plumbed in the Amp remote wire and RCA plugs. Ran them either side of the car. Took the Panels off beneath the glovebox and ran the RCAs behind the carpet, side trim and under the sill guard things?
Carpet:
Front door:
Rear door:
Did the same with the remote wire on the driver's side. Also Earthed the amp onto the earthing point for rear passenger side lights.
Now I just need to find where to connect to 12v power. Think it will have to be the battery as there don't seem to be any hefty cables inside. Looks like it will mean drilling a hole in the bulkhead though :/
Also started on a bit more engine cleaning:
Nearest part cleaned, further part not.
This was so gunked up I didn't know it said volvo on it lol
comparison to uncleaned:
random shot
Whole bay, bit more effort on the Volvo letters on the rocker cover
Hopefully get the sub fully wired up and working tomorrow
Thanks for looking,
Matt
30/06/10
No change on the sub wiring, stereo is in and working blasting my tunes all day
My mate gave me a couple of old smith's guages - battery and fuel. Battery will be useful but might use the fuel one for coolant or washer fluid, depends how hard it would be to sense.
Will give them a clean and refurb the paint on the bezels.
And after cleaning the engine with copious amounts of WD40 and some 80's degreaser which contained who knows what, I was driving around with smoke bellowing out off all the oil burning off
Thanks for looking, I'll probably have done more by tonight

#3: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Timon2210, Location: PalestinePosted: Wed Jun 30, 2010 8:44 am ---- great project, the car is in great condition, everything that the car got is the original so far, that is very good, enjoy it mate, and keep the great work
#4: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: smiddies, Location: BrightonPosted: Wed Jun 30, 2010 8:44 am ---- Best to use GT85 mate, so much better then WD40, and i was a WD40 fan...
But the car looks great... how about a respray???
Any other mods or anything like that??
#5: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Nimminz, Location: Durham, NE England, UKPosted: Wed Jun 30, 2010 8:51 am ---- Cheers for the comments!
Some alloys, I'll get a pic or two up tonight. Still saving for em at the mo.
Volvo guage pod
Smiths guages
Sub
Possibly lowering
Paint headlamp bowls black (like black valeos on pugs)
Twin exhaust possibly
Wan't to keep it more or less standard as its such a great example.
Was going to do a satin black drift machine with Dayglow orange wheels but I'm keeping it standard now so I'll just keep the colour. Paints in excellent nick too - better than the pugs!
Will get some GT85, I was just using what I had last night - current project expenditure is at £5 for a tin of satin black paint
Nice Opel - Timon2210
Thanks for looking!
#6: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Len_Beach, Location: LeedsPosted: Wed Jun 30, 2010 8:51 am ---- Not meaning to sound awful but why?!
I thought you may be going down the trampdrift route but it would appear not.
#7: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Wed Jun 30, 2010 8:57 am ---- I'm still not entirely sure what's going on, but each to their own.
#8: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: twed207, Location: borders, near carlisle.Posted: Wed Jun 30, 2010 9:02 am ---- looks funky, good work on the engine bay!
think the paint will come up good with a claying and a good polish.

#10: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Szgany, Location: Woodham, County DurhamPosted: Wed Jun 30, 2010 9:17 am ---- Please don't add any gauges, thats a cracking car and you're doing great with it. It'll look the dogs when you get it back to pristine (standard). Always been a great fan of Swedish cars.

#11: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Harry, Location: StaffordPosted: Wed Jun 30, 2010 10:56 am ---- It's looking good, like how much detail you go into explaining what you've done on each day keep it up.
#12: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Wed Jun 30, 2010 11:13 am ---- I likewise want to ask why? Are these collectable now or something?!
#13: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Nimminz, Location: Durham, NE England, UKPosted: Wed Jun 30, 2010 3:10 pm ---- Thanks for all the comments, even the slightly confused ones as to why I changed from a nice newish 206 to an old banger, old mans Volvo.
Not particularly collectible, or rare, might be worth a bit more in a few years who knows. But thats not why I bought it. I actually like the look of it, its fun to drive, RWD for a bit of 'off the road' fun and easy to work on. Was origionally going to go all tramp drift, satin black paint, Bright orange steelies etc. but as its such a good example of these cars, I'm going for the 'fresh out the showroom' look
I think those Smith's one will look canny, OEM Volvo mount and that.
Exterior will probably be done by my mate who's a Valeter, all AutoGlym qualified etc.
and found a way to illuminate them, genuine peugeot 206 sidelight bulb holders and 501 push-fit bulbs
Will probably solder leads straight to the connectors.
Still not got anywhere with the amp power wire, I'll probably have to run it down the passenger side and see if it fits through the bonnet catch cable grommet. That means swapping the RCAs and remote wire
Hopefully will be getting those Mk2 GLT wheels soon, As they need refurbing I think I'll do them with a polished 'dish' and rim with metallic gunmetal sort of colour inside with chrome wheel nuts and centre badge thing.
When I get some money it will get the full works, hopefully. Going to get into detailing for this car. ATM its bucket of water to rinse the muck off, bucket of water and cheap car shampoo stuff, another bucket of water to rinse and then dry it off.
Sub now fitted and working, need a way of securing it as it slipped across the boot and pulled the earth cable off :/ good job it wern't the live eh?
Also fitted the pipercross, not had a proper chance to test out how it sounds, you can drive round normally and it wont make any difference, foot down it makes a great deep rumble Also need a better way of securing that then electrical tape :/
Gave the standard filter box a spray of satin black while I was at it.
Also gave the drivers side front brakes etc. some fresh paint:
With the wheel on:
Pics tomorrow, Too tired tonight
EDIT: added
Cheers,
Matt
Update:
Don't think I've posted any pics of the interior so thourt i might as well:
More engine bay polishing:
Took the filter off, was just making me put me foot down everywhere to make it growl lol
Started making my own Guage pod for in font of the gear lever as the volvo ones seem a bit scarce to say the least
Templates
Cut the wood bits out using the templates to see how they fitted
Epoxy resin to hold them together
Filler ... to fill the gaps
Fitted perfect ... a little too perfect as it took me ages to lever them back out.
Only problem is I didn't drill the holes for the guages before sticking it all together But I'll manage somehow.
Dunno what I'm going to cover it in, Give it a thin skim of filler and paint? Leatherette? Carpet? Skin it in carbon? (yeah I can do that )
Then its just wiring it up
And a couple pretty pictures I took own the unsurfaced bit of my favorate actual private road that I use for sideways-ness (not my private road tho)
Thanks for looking
Matt

#21: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Nimminz, Location: Durham, NE England, UKPosted: Sat Jul 03, 2010 5:40 pm ---- haha, would you believe it hasn't rained while I have been out in this car, apart from once for 5 mins. In which time I drove normally to somewhere off the road where I could practice, by the time I got the it had dried up
But it goes pretty easy without rain, I'm still a learner though
I never have the right tools so drill and coping saw it is:
All cut
Still a beginner at using filler
Nearly sanded
Test fit:
Will hopefully get it finished tomorrow, dunno what colour it will go
Thanks for looking
#23: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Nimminz, Location: Durham, NE England, UKPosted: Sun Jul 04, 2010 4:15 pm ---- Tonight another 360 owner of the volvo 300 site came down to the retail park meet
some pics:
Took a few more but these are the ones that survived the heavy photoshopping
#28: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Antix, Location: WorcesterPosted: Wed Jul 28, 2010 2:25 pm ---- Those alloys make the car a GLT
UHU FTW! [but not in confined spaces]
I am still impressed Matt, love the way the gauge holder looks original!
#29: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Luke, Location: LeedsPosted: Wed Jul 28, 2010 3:58 pm ---- Bit of an odd choice. Whats the spec like? Is that the Volvo with the Porsche style rear axle with the gear box mounted on it?
#31: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Nimminz, Location: Durham, NE England, UKPosted: Sun Aug 01, 2010 3:03 pm ---- its the 2.0 8v N/a injection
Yeah porsche style rear axle (de dion) with leaf springs. 2 degrees -ve camber as standard Rear mounted box straight onto diff with some sort of torque tube or something.
Love the wheels like, hopefully getting 2 rubbered and fitted tomorrow now i've got them sprayed and nearly mirror polished
Cheers for the comments!
The switch is to turn the guages on and off as i can't wire it to any electrics inside the cabin, has to go straight onto the alternator as the inside voltage is regulated to 10v
Sun roof has gone on strike stuck in the up-at-one-side-down-at-the-other position lol
Will whack a few more pics up soon if people are still looking
Cheers Last edited by Nimminz on Sun Oct 17, 2010 3:39 am; edited 1 time in total
new wheels, love them! only two at the moment, need slightly lower profile tyres 185/60 R14s as opposed to the 185/65s that are on at the moment and a 1 or 2 inch drop front and back. well when i have the money. Also looking at leather seats, uber rare volvo guage holder and rear speakers. still, parts are cheap for these
#33: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Nimminz, Location: Durham, NE England, UKPosted: Fri Aug 20, 2010 9:06 am ---- can't remember whats been done since last update so here's a list of whats been done to date:
2x 'Leo' alloys on the back (still waiting to do other two)
JVC head unit with aux in and MP3 cd compatibility
Alpine 10cm speakers in the front (due to be changed back to volvo ones)
Sub and wiring removed
Lots of parts cleaned and polished
Bright orange volvo badge on front grille but take it off for photos / shows etc.
Guage holder now removed
Pipercross filter removed
and a couple of pics from my holiday in seahouses:
Cheers for looking!

#37: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: mattievrs, Location: LeicesterPosted: Sun Oct 17, 2010 3:13 am ---- Are the leos done for the front now?
#38: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Nimminz, Location: Durham, NE England, UKPosted: Sun Oct 17, 2010 3:38 am ---- Yeah, got all 4 done and on 185/60 14s instead of 185/65s. The laquer over the polished part has peeled off in patches so they are looking a bit sorry for them selves, need re-sanding and polishing. Yellow fog lights were done last weekend. Got a badgeless grille thats nearly finished to go on soon. Sub has been put back in and guages removed.
Now i'm saving for my own welder so i can fix the rot and start making stuff.
Thanks for looking
#39: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Nimminz, Location: Durham, NE England, UKPosted: Sun Oct 24, 2010 2:58 am ----
Badgeless grille
Just got some fly-eye stuff to do lights too
#40: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Sun Oct 24, 2010 5:16 am ---- Nice work, the 3 doors look not bad at all. All the best on the self-taught welding front unless you already know how to??
#41: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Nimminz, Location: Durham, NE England, UKPosted: Sun Oct 24, 2010 2:38 pm ---- cheers, the 3 door is a mark 2 and thy look better anyway, still mine's practical
I'm doing a part-time Mig welding course, i wouldn't dare set about welding up the holes if i had no idea. Only problem now is that a mig looks to be more expensive than the course :/ Hopefully i can find a 2nd hand one with a bottle, they cost 70 quid a year to rent before you get the gas
missed out on some leather seats for it, seen a porsche 944 in a scrappies so might look to get the front seats out that
Lowering is high on the want list too, looking to go down about 2"
Thanks for looking
#42: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Antix, Location: WorcesterPosted: Sun Oct 24, 2010 2:44 pm ---- Badgeless grille has made it look like a bit like a Talbot Solara/Alpine
Also resembles a Renault 18 strangely
#43: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Nimminz, Location: Durham, NE England, UKPosted: Sun Oct 24, 2010 2:54 pm ----
ren 18
talbot
yup see where your coming from there, those wheels on the 18 are cool like still gotta put that volvo badge on it but run out of hot glue sticks
Fly-eye'd the back lights today
notice the broom handle holing the boot up
Doing the front lights tomorrow
#44: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Nimminz, Location: Durham, NE England, UKPosted: Sun Dec 12, 2010 2:55 am ---- not posted on this thread for a while
Electric fan
The car is great in the snow! fun and sensible
Before fly-eye
After fly eye
Cant use it on the head lights, my wipers would take it off
Started to refurbish the leo's as the winter hadsn't done them any good so far:
So i sanded the 'dish' down and got some shocking paint:
Should look good, i think
Opinions more than welcome!

#48: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Harry, Location: StaffordPosted: Mon Dec 13, 2010 4:54 pm ---- Love em mate no idea they would turn out like that good colour choice

#53: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Nimminz, Location: Durham, NE England, UKPosted: Tue Dec 14, 2010 5:57 pm ---- Cheers, the car always gets mixed reactions, i quite like it that way

#56: Re: '88 Volvo 360 GLT Project Author: Nimminz, Location: Durham, NE England, UKPosted: Thu Dec 16, 2010 3:39 pm ---- I know, wish i had although its minus god knows what and all the water on the car was frozen solid, even after an hour driving :/ . Hate the salty roads like, not good for rust. I did wipe the brake dust off the wheels though lol i'm a bot OCD cleanliness on those lol
