The intake manifold, throttle body & exhaust manifold are visually different plus the engine cover.

Peugeot's bumpf ..
"It is a development of the EW10 engine found in the 206 GTi, 307, and 406 models. It is equipped with double overhaed camshafts and 16 valves. It is characterised by a unique cylinder head with modified intake and exhaust flow and a bespoke engine management system, making it the most powerful 4-cylinder engine of the current Peugeot generation (in 2003).
This specially developed engine features an intake camshaft that is equipped with a variable valve timing system (VVT). The variation takes place one degree at a time. The compact aluminium alloy engine block (AS5) has cast-iron cylinder liners inserted at the foundry, the crankshaft (manufactured from GS cast iron) has eight conterweights and is balanced to withstand the maximum engine speed of 7300 rpm without vibration"
... there's another 10 pages or so like this LOL

In reality there's only about 20bhp difference between the two at the start anyway!

In reality, even with about 20bhp more, the 180 is totally different to drive. You can get an extra 20bhp with mods on a 138, but it won't be a 180 just by adding power
#12: Re: whats the difference between the 180 and GTi? Author: no_offences, Location: LeedsPosted: Mon Jul 26, 2010 4:47 am ---- 180s are totally different, and its not a huge amount bhp more but slap a remap on both and its a diffo story
#13: Re: whats the difference between the 180 and GTi? Author: kieron, Location: in the housePosted: Mon Jul 26, 2010 4:56 am ---- between my gti and kyles 180 is a different story it kills it after 2nd gear the 138 from what i read isnt very good for geting bhp from unless you start putting throttle bodies on and change the ecu as it isnt very good to be mapped
#14: Re: whats the difference between the 180 and GTi? Author: Jonny, Location: In the valley / next to woolworthsPosted: Mon Jul 26, 2010 5:16 am ---- Had a company car GTi 138 (Phase 1) and owned a GTi 180 for a year, Totally different experience, much more torque much more noise, handling above everything was a different league. (thicker anti roll bars, suspension etc...)
Plus there are the same amount of money for a decent one now (same age) about £3500 - £4000
Only bad point of course is insurance, mine cost £2100 to insure at 20 with 2 years NCB
