#1: tyre stretch? Author: Teebag, Location: exhall, bedworth, coventryPosted: Wed Aug 18, 2010 5:28 pm ---- ok so my octanes are now off the car ready for a good refurb in preperation for some new rubber and i'm wanting to get a bit of stretch on the go. the alloys a 6.5j so am thinking a 165/50/15 bridgestone potenza is the tyre to go for..... am just wondering: does anyone know if this would be ok to run as an everyday tyre given the width of the wheel and the tyres i'm wanting to fit?

#3: Re: tyre stretch? Author: Iain, Location: Aberdeen, ScotlandPosted: Wed Aug 18, 2010 5:46 pm ---- Or Uz, he's giving it a shot on Nimrods.
#4: Re: tyre stretch? Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Wed Aug 18, 2010 5:48 pm ---- probably better off with Ross as Jamie isn't active on the forum just now as he's doing lots of studying i think.
Or... try www.wheel-whores.com/ and www.tyrestretch.com/index.php which will be good to see what a 165 looks like on a 6.5j. I think you'd be fine though as long as you keep the tyre pressure up which seems to be the key to tyre stretch. Although it might be worth asking the question on wheel whores or even EU mania which is a UK site.
#5: Re: tyre stretch? Author: Teebag, Location: exhall, bedworth, coventryPosted: Wed Aug 18, 2010 5:51 pm ---- looked on tyrestretch.com and couldn't see any real issues..... just wondered if it would be ok as a daily driver more than anything.... tyre pressure isnt a probably, check them weekly as it is atm and only takes a min or 2 with the compressor
#6: Re: tyre stretch? Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Wed Aug 18, 2010 5:57 pm ---- You'd probably be fine. But if you go on wheel W|-|ores you'll find that people have mixed opinions about tyre stretch. Not to mention that there are nutters out there who have had blow outs, knackered a £500 wheel and still continue to do it! It's most definitely a run at your own risk scenario but generally alright if you maintain them.
#7: Re: tyre stretch? Author: Teebag, Location: exhall, bedworth, coventryPosted: Wed Aug 18, 2010 6:05 pm ---- just been looking on a golf forum at some1 who's got the same wheels and tyres as me and they seem to be doing fine i'm only going to be stretching the 0.5j over the recommended fitment anyway so its hardly anything crazy.... have pm'ed ross aswell lol...... cheers for the help guys

#10: Re: tyre stretch? Author: RustyDLK, Location: Armagh - Northern IrelandPosted: Thu Aug 19, 2010 3:28 am ---- sorry to sound like a noob but what exactly is it??
#11: Re: tyre stretch? Author: vanman_foci, Location: Barry, South WalesPosted: Thu Aug 19, 2010 3:29 am ---- because your taking a tyre and streching the side wall.
#12: Re: tyre stretch? Author: Teebag, Location: exhall, bedworth, coventryPosted: Thu Aug 19, 2010 3:37 am ---- yea.... but i'm not talking extreme stretch.....
#13: Re: tyre stretch? Author: M60SHW, Location: CarlislePosted: Thu Aug 19, 2010 5:30 am ---- It's not the best thing to do for an everyday driver as the sidewalls naker quicker and a hight risk of blowouts and chances at they constantly leak air also finding a garage to do it is slim personally ad avoid it and it's really pointless I don't understand the style in it ad much rather have a set of fat wheels than skinny ones that are two small for the car
#14: Re: tyre stretch? Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Thu Aug 19, 2010 5:36 am ---- I personally would never trust stretched tyres. I severely dislike the 'euro' scene as it is, but then they go and start messing with one of the most important things on the car, the tyres! Not only do you have to run at a higher pressure (causing a harder ride and stressing the tyre more) but the risk of blowouts and damage is a fair deal higher.
#15: Re: tyre stretch? Author: Uz, Location: No Man's LandPosted: Thu Aug 19, 2010 5:55 am ---- I understand why the majority of people don't like stretched tyres but why do BMW send the M3 CSL out of the factory with stretched semi-slick tyres on the back wheels..?
I've seen people run thinner tyres on wider wheels then what you've listed and they're never had a problem. 165/50 R15 will be fine on a 6.5J wheel as that was what I was gunna run on my 205 wheels but with the 16" I'm running the same width but a smaller side wall. On my 17" I'll be running a 35 side wall.

They're an engineering/automotive company who know exactly what they're doing! Plus semis will have much better toughness than a tread tyre.
#17: Re: tyre stretch? Author: M60SHW, Location: CarlislePosted: Thu Aug 19, 2010 8:02 am ---- Also a dowt you insurance would be to happy with it. Just get some proper sized tyres for piece of mind if nothin else
#18: Re: tyre stretch? Author: pete_206, Location: Ash, SurreyPosted: Thu Aug 19, 2010 8:08 am ---- I had 195's stretched over 205 rims. the problem with running a stretched tyre everyday is that it can bald the inner edge of the tyres quite drastically. My old job used to involve practically driving for a living though. If I were you I'de just fit the right size tyres if you're driving your car alot.
With inner wall tyre wear it's also difficult to see how worn the tyre is, unless you take the wheel off to have a look.
#19: Re: tyre stretch? Author: Ruffy_206, Location: BristolPosted: Thu Aug 19, 2010 9:51 am ---- strech is cool and i cant see how it works but thier is enough people out thier doing it.
#20: Re: tyre stretch? Author: Ross, Location: West MidlandsPosted: Thu Aug 19, 2010 11:47 am ---- I've just PM'd you back Teebag but I'll reply in here aswell.
I'm running 185/45's on a 15x8 wheel and they've been perfectly fine, two of my dustcaps are seized on so I can't put air in two of the tyres, not that I've needed to, they don't leak air at all. I've given the car death on a few occasions, I've had the tyres screeching and felt the weight of the car shifting, so to my mind the tyres would just break traction before you even get near popping them off the rim. Another couple of ways that would back up this theory is that drift cars run stretch with no issues, and obviously they put massive stress on their tyres! Also, when I went to have my wheel alignment sorted out, I got speaking to a guy who worked at the place I went to, I think he said his son ran stretched tyres, and he explained to me the amount of pressure you'd need to physically pop the tyres off the rim, and it was a lot, you'd not get near that sort of pressure whilst cornering, that was the point he was making.
pete_206 - the tyres balding on the inner edge was most likely down to poor wheel alignment...
My stretch:
One downside I've found to stretched tyres is that I get a lot of stone chips to the rear wheel lips, as obviously they're more exposed! Doesn't bother me much though, the red lip tape stops most of it, and failing that I just touch them up with touch up paint, they were chipped when I bought them anyway.
#21: Re: tyre stretch? Author: TheUniqueOne, Location: High WycombePosted: Thu Aug 19, 2010 11:55 am ---- my mate just put some 165/50 on his 7J wheels some SERIOUS strech on them but he uses it everyday with no prblem
cheers
paul
#22: Re: tyre stretch? Author: Ross, Location: West MidlandsPosted: Thu Aug 19, 2010 12:06 pm ---- A guy on Club Lupo ran 165/50/15's on an 8J rim...
Extreme to say the least, I think he was a bit scared of them himself so never really pushed it hard round corners. They never came off though. And for the record he now runs wider tyres.
I don't condone anything that extreme, but the point is, he ran them successfully so it shows how far you can potentially go I guess.
#23: Re: tyre stretch? Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Thu Aug 19, 2010 12:16 pm ---- Tyre stretching is as daft as tinting lights and modifying any other safety item.
