#1: Air horn help! Author: Rob2859, Location: HalifaxPosted: Thu Aug 26, 2010 7:34 am ---- Well I went into the yorkshire trading company (former woolworths in my town) and found everything in there was crap. then I found a not too bad car section which I bought for £12.99! I had to have it for the price. Bought some nice mats too. But anyway...
I failed to wire it up. I have mounted the compressor and the trumpets in the corner behind the battery but was stumped by the wiring. Not just from the fact that I have no understanding of relays but I don't know which is live and which is earth on the original horn.
Help please? I cut the plug off the end but I have a pink wire and a yellow wire with a green strip on it. (it might be the other way around actually).
Can someone tell me which is the live? At least thats a start.
Also the instuctions which are now lost told me to earth the relay. Could I not just use the earth cable on the original horn?

(I didn't use one... Maybe somebody else could confirm it, but i had no problems) Just connect the compressor cables to the orignal horn ones one way then test the horn..(connect the tubes to the horns too) If if comes on but doesn't make a noise then it's sucking, just connect the cables the other way. That how i worked it out anyway.

This can be seen on the bottom right hand corner inside the engine bay
fuse box and can supply up to 35A to the horn.
So there's little point in adding another rellay in that case.
However, I don't know if the 1.1 has one (check first) otherwise you will
damage the steering wheel horn switch with the much heavier current of the
air compressor - guaranteed.
Also, if using the standard rellay of the fuse box and not adding another,
you must uprate fuse F5 (First one on the bottom group in engine bay fuse box) from
15 to 25A (white) which is actually perfectly acceptable and is specified
as an option in the manual.
In any case proceed with great care and don't rush.

So if I have a relay then All I need is a fuse? Would have thought the 1.1 has one as it is proberbly the same horn. Can anyone confirm? Will have to see if I can find it in the haynes manual. Although I need to find the haynes manual first

Look on the bottom right-hand section of the fuse box.
If there are two rellays then the bottom one is for the horn.
You can confirm this by unpluging the rellay momentarily
(with engine off) and trying the horn. If it doesn't sound, that
is your horn rellay.
If there is only one rellay in that area it could be that the horn
is fed directly from the steering wheel switch in which case you
definately need an external rellay added.

for a 'click' sound coming from the fusebox everytime
you press the horn switch in that case.

If there is something connected just unplug the said relay
and see if that stops it from working. This is quite safe with
no key in the ignition.
