Has the block been painted? I always wonder if shot blasting an engine prior to strip down would finish it off like new.
Even the bottom pulley looks nice. Bolts look new too. I want a new pulley as there is a bit of corrosion on mine. £55 for a new one...
Is your rear rocker cover breather connected to anything? I see the later EW engines with the tall rocker covers have a breather on the inlet cam cover too. Any rally or touring car EW engine seem to have a breather on the front cover. Do you think having one would be an advantage?
Yes.... the block got painted. I have to say the whole thing impresses me. Charlie has a good engine builder. He has replace everything that needed doing. In the bag of bits that came back with the engine are some nice surprises.
A huge quantity of bolts
The old tappet buckets
The old springs
The old bottom end shells
The old pistons and rods
Old gaskets
I am not listing everything but suffice to say there is a lot of stuff.
The breather is to be connected to a catch tank. Small piece of tubing and a filter on the tank. I have had the end of the original breather tube covered to see what comes out and I have to say the old engine was not a big breather. The new one will need to breath me thinks.
Fancy a poke at the end HP figure as much as I know you dont like to "label" an engine

#319: Re: Macs rally 206 project.. New engine spec & Pictures Author: macj, Location: EssexPosted: Wed Aug 31, 2011 1:12 pm ---- Engine is back in car tonight.... SAE 30 to run it in for a couple of hours and then miller oil
The only issue is what grade to use.... I am swayed toward CFS 5W/40
I will get some pictures up tomorrow of it fitted back in and see if I can scrounge a digital camcorder to capture the fire up
base on additive all racing oil are pretty much similar; higher does of ZDDP (>1000ppm; if you have cat then beware.....) and depends on brands some will have moly (redline, royalpurple, mobil) as well; generally lower level of detergent means more frequence oil change; also reduce the chances of detonation.
however; as far as i remember, VR1 wasn't truely synthetic oil, it is mainly group 3 base oil; moreover, the ZDDP level was not amazing high compare to the others.
better to get something better. i know miller CFS is quite commonly used in UK and in US people tends to use redline, amsoil or royal purple; those are truely synthetic oil
just my little though really.

#325: Re: Macs rally 206 project.. New engine spec & Pictures Author: Seabook, Posted: Wed Aug 31, 2011 2:42 pm ---- if you are worried you can run oil analysis of the new oil (VOA) and used oil after each oil drain (UOA) to monitor the health of the engine.
#326: Re: Macs rally 206 project.. New engine spec & Pictures Author: macj, Location: EssexPosted: Wed Aug 31, 2011 3:02 pm ---- I need a good chemist for that

5. Heavy duty race spec bearings.
6. Uprated oil pump.
Can you give any detail or brand for that? And is your pistons 2 ring ?
And my guess about RR. If you still in standart cams i think 205 hp with a good cam you will see 225 hp
The end shells are made by Mahle but ACL are the same quality
The pistons are 3 ring
The oil pump has an uprated relief spring fitted which is available through CTM Performance Engineering
Is this pistons in picture are you using ? This is why i did ask how many rings in your piston. That 9190DA is for 206 GTI180. As you know GTI and GTI180 using same engine block. And using same bore x stroke dimension used in both engine. But EW10J4S using different head from EW12 engine. I know as you know that but i'm not sure are you know cylinder dom displacement on head is totaly different. When you use Wössner 12.5 CR piston for EW10J4S (gti180) in EW10J4 (gti) you are getting nearly 14.6:1 compression ratio. That is huge ratio even for N/A engine. Knocking and detonation is on the door with bad fuel. I think you will need reconsider about water spray.

Good luck with your new engine. Is looking good.
We did a dummy build and got a CR of 12.2:1.... so we should be ok
#329: Re: Macs rally 206 project.. New engine spec & Pictures Author: macj, Location: EssexPosted: Thu Sep 01, 2011 12:18 pm ---- OK.... new engine is fitted and running nicely
I ran it in on the ramp for 2 hours using an SAE30 mineral oil then dumped it hot and changed the filter. It is now running on Millers CFS 5W/40 fully synthetic race oil. It is very noticeable that the engine is a lot smoother after the balance. On the road the slightest throttle brings on the predictable "pinking" due to the increased CR but that will map out on the rollers. The temperature is nice and stable with the fan dealing with the extra heat.
Bring on the rollers
