plenty of de-icer and windscreen washer

make sure the engine coolant has anti-freezer, not just plain water

always got thick jackets in the boot

get AA/ RAC membership

and practise how to slide correctly when snowing~!

engine braking incase of snow....and i know people were joking above when they said about handbraking etc but i found an empty car park and put my old car into slides to learn to correct....but im not condoning that...if you do it you need LOADS of space and someone to fix your car if you get it wrong lol

Just take it easy and give yourself extra time to get wherever you need to go.

Last winter (it was mental if everyone can remember) I had a survival pack in the boot, which included: water, bit of food/chocolate, picnic rug thing (for warmth, not to sit down and munch, spare clothes... Oh and a spade.

You will slide at some point if it snows. Find an empty carpark/random bit of land, and practice your car control on snow. Not strictly legal I'm sure, but it really does help.

Winter tyres make a MASSIVE difference. If you can afford it, get a set. I won't be, and I imagine most people won't be, but they do make a huge difference if you're a bit worried.

Easy on the throttle as well, so many people get stuck by just spinning their wheels and going nowhere.

I was well tempted by some tyre chains last year haha! Thankfully my spec 2's did very well in the snow, ice, and s**te

as said already. just take it a bit steadier. when there's a bit of snow around find some space and practise locking the rear axel up and correcting the resulting slide....

dont spin the wheels, and try and keep as much mometum up as possible, as said if it snows hevey you will slide, the 206 is preety good in the snow though, if you have got wide rims might be worth getting a narrower set or steelies for the winter.

Slow down, brake gently & early & use engine braking.

When driving in snow or ice, handle your car controls like you should a good women. Caress them slowly & tentatively taking your time, don't just prod & bang away at them trying to get there as quick as you can!

#23: Re: Tips For Winter Driving Author: Jordan_xsi, Location: Ipswich PostPosted: Mon Oct 25, 2010 2:17 am

Just drive slower and make sure you have essentials in the boot. As said before AA/RAC membership is a pretty good idea, well worth it as its only like £15 a month. But aslong as you take it steady you should be ok. Lets just hope we dont have another winter like last!

Just out of interest are 206's much good in bad weather? i got in Feb this year so the worst of the snow was gone by then.

Have a go at this; better in back wheel drive but you can still have some fun in a 206 Smile

The Scandinavian flick is a technique used in rallying. While approaching the corner you apply a slight steering input to the opposite direction of the corner, then steering into the corner, while sharply lifting off the throttle and (in some cases, depending on speed and type of layout) lightly applying the brakes. This will cause the car to slide sideways facing slightly away from the turn. Then steering input is applied towards the corner and as the driver releases the brake pedal while still holding down the throttle the car will slingshot itself around the corner to the desired direction. Very Happy Countersteering will again be required to control the induced oversteer.

My pug was great in the snow, very easy to correct in a slide and
Everything BUT if you have a gti or sp fuel cap change it to te standard one because it will freeze everytimr you go to fill up and the keys can snap easily so pour hot water or a hot flannel over the cap and itl be fine Smile

If the up coming winter is going to be as bad for you as the last one was I really REALLY suggest you buy some winter tires. I was completely surprised watching videos of cars sliding and skidding all around on an inch or two of snow. I even asked on here whats wrong and they informed me that most people are driving on summer tires.

Anyways they really do make a big difference. But the other really important thing is a relaxed non aggressive driver. You won't get anywhere by just flooring, that will only achieve two things: you'll dig in and form a patch of ice under your tires. If you get stuck, gently rock front to back do not just attempt to get out in one try. Put it in second gear, slowly applying power and releasing the clutch, when you fell it slipping push the clutch back in and let it swing back then repeat the previous movement until you're out. Its just like riding a swing, you can't get to the top in one try Wink

Also take into consideration that the braking distances are massively increased so don't speed and keep the safety distance.. The hardest thing is watching how you're approaching some one else and just can't stop..bloody slow motion horror film.

As for other equipment buy some snow socks just in case (especially if you're going to use summer tires), have a blanket, a few warm clothes (and socks, trust me on this one) and a small shovel in the boot. Oh and a tow rope (its hard for someone to tow you out without one). Also don't drive around on reserve fuel, if you get stuck in the cold you're f*cked. Seriously.

Oh and a photo from last year and a year before just to be clear where this is coming from Laughing

BTW it handles okay in the snow, just take it easy, slow and take care of yourself Wink

Mine handled great in the snow last year! worst thing that happened was when i was turning a corner, was going a bit too fast and hit some black ice... started going sideways and couldnt do anything about it! Ended up going over the road, up the curb and stopped literally 3 inches from a big cast iron type fence! Have to say.. i absolutely cr***ed myself as I'd never experienced that before!

Well last year was my first winter... The worst luck. & to make it worse I had to be up 4 times a week to take my mum to work at half 5 in the morning. & I did crash once, didn't even slide... as some people think is inevitable.

So my advice is... pull off very slowly, change gear very slowly. & DO NOT be worried about going 30 mph if you can't see/there are lumps of snow everywhere. Everyone else who's sensible will be doing the same thing! If you feel the tyres spin slightly when you're going along, just slow down. When approaching something like a roundabout... do not brake until you have to. Change down through the gears, this will slow you down a lot, then you will only need to brake gently & a little bit. For god's sake do not brake sharply, do not think you're better than everyone else & you can beat the snow.

& remember, Ice is just as dangerous.

You're better off in a 206 than something like a BMW anyway... Front wheel drive rules in snow!

That reminded me, i saw someone pull out of a drive onto a main road in a Range Rover, obviously thinking the snow and ice would make no difference to them.. ended up sliding across the road backwards... since nobody got hurt it was actually pretty entertaining

practice makes perfect!

just remember this!
obviously the same as other have said shovel, warm clothes, bit of food and water, don't think anyones mentioned a bag of grit! for putting down on'ce you've dug your tires out Razz

on the practice reference i've had to use my skills at using the handbrake many times last winter two times were to actually park up as the carpark for work was up a hill so i couldn't turn around without stopping (and getting stuck Razz )
and the other time was to get out of a four wheel drift (only doing 20 using my engine to control) and into a drift that was more managable so i didn't end in the ditch on the opposite side of the road xD

the car park to get into work Razz

the hill behind me to get out the culdesac :L

takeing your time is key! use the engine to slow you down instead of the brakes, and dont use too much acceleration when pulling away, you wont get far, lol.

this year is going to be a good test for me, after driving cars in the winter for years, this will be my first year of driving trucks in it, so when your worrying about trying to stop your 206, have a think for me in my 12 ton iveco lol.

Haha - Everyone hates them in the wet, I love them! Slightly lively but I never feel I'm not in control, suppose we all drive differently.

Hopefully this winter wont be as bad, wish global warming would hurry up and turn the UK into Miami Laughing

In the snow and ice try and keep well away from all the other idiots as there's thousands of people on the roads thatll never have a clue of how to drive in snow.

As said plenty of times above find an empty car park (or industrial estate) and get some practice, by the end of last year i could controll my 306 in a sideways slide for about 300 yards

My recomendation... Brakes are your enemy, Drive sensibly, leave enough room from the car in front to stop without using excessive braking, smooth acceleration and deceleration are the key points. anticipate everything before it can happen.

In brief.... you need your front wheels for steering. Dont lock them up or spin them because you will lose your steering. Leave the handbrake for parking or carparks. STEADY WINS THE RACE Thumbs Up

#54: Re: Tips For Winter Driving Author: Drake, Location: Midlands PostPosted: Wed Oct 27, 2010 3:34 am
    ----
Yeah macj makes a good point that I forgot.

If you do need to brake, aim to stop like 5-10 metres back from where you want to stop. That way if you do slide forward a little, you have time to come off the brakes and reapply a couple of times (SLOWLY)

#55: Re: Tips For Winter Driving Author: E5GDM, Location: Essex PostPosted: Wed Oct 27, 2010 4:00 am

I'm sure I heard that if your driving in deep fresh snow, you can stop quicker by locking your wheels.
Apparently a wedge of compacted snow & ice will build up under the wheels & stop the car.

please dont try it..... I am in essex too so if you can tell me when your out and about I will keep my car at home Laughing

My fuel cap (SP) is a nightmare in snow as the lock freezes - not good when you are super low on fuel because of tail back/accidents and pull onto the forecourt to find the thing won't budge!

I practised small handbrake turns around corners in the snow and find it does really help - but be careful!

I also had my ski and boots in the car ( I work in a ski centre) and so if I get stuck at least I can have some fun!
I won't even mention the details of attaching a rope to the towing eye of a mates car and being pulled along Smile

Won't work if you have ABS

Non-ABS FTW in snow Very Happy infact you don't need it anyway Laughing

The best bit of advice is don't drive like an idiot.

Think ahead... can you stop in time? Will the car in front stop? What hazards could come up?

If you feel your car sliding around - then you are driving too fast for the conditions.

Careful use of the brakes, accelerator, gears and steering and you will be fine. No sudden actions.

i drove from swindon to Norfolk in 3hrs last year in this.

It was ace but as said take it easy for your first time also if you lock the brakes lift off and apply again and dont touch the clutch till the last second.
