#1: 180 Oil usage/smoke Author: pat_986, Location: OxfordPosted: Tue Nov 16, 2010 12:47 pm ---- Hi all
I have done a few searches but to no avail.
I have a 54 plate 180, with about 85k on the clock.
I have only had it a few months, and have done one oil change.
My question is, how much oild does your gti/180 use?
I would say mine is using 1l about every 3-4k, seems like a little much to me, but do know some engines do use oil.
Also, even when the engine is @ normal operating temp, there seems to be a bit of smoke out the exhaust, the same type you see when the engine is cold and its cold outside?
Any comments?
Thanks

#3: Re: 180 Oil usage/smoke Author: rubyspilot, Posted: Tue Nov 16, 2010 1:06 pm ---- Sorry to hear that buddy....a litre every 3k is a tad ott.
If the smoke is blue you might be lucky and changing the valve stem seals would be my first choice.
If not then it's getting past the rings( serious bad news)
All this notwithstanding a leak of course
#4: Re: 180 Oil usage/smoke Author: Antix, Location: WorcesterPosted: Tue Nov 16, 2010 1:19 pm ---- My red 180 rarely used oil inbetween services (6 monthly approx).
I never topped it up, and it never smoked either

I guess I will just monitor it over the next few tho miles.
I suppose if the head does need to come out, at least it would be a good excuse to port polish and add cams!
Are there any other reasons for white/steam like smoke out the exhaust?
#6: Re: 180 Oil usage/smoke Author: Seabook, Posted: Tue Nov 16, 2010 2:00 pm ---- port polish virtually is a waste of money
On the 180, or any engine?
Why would you say that?
#8: Re: 180 Oil usage/smoke Author: hotham15, Location: AberdeenPosted: Tue Nov 16, 2010 2:17 pm ---- 250ml for 10 000 miles... for me... She sounds like a heavy drinker!

White smoke is water in the combustion.....might be headgasket.
Blue is oil
Black is fuel.
You might be lucky and get away with a headgasket.....might explain the oil loss too......check for the white emulsion under the oil filler.

Cheers. oil cap is clean, and im not loosing any water, so doin't think its HG.
Will have to check the colour of the smoke a bit better.
#11: Re: 180 Oil usage/smoke Author: Seabook, Posted: Tue Nov 16, 2010 3:35 pm ---- did you redline your car a lot?
Do I, very very rarely. Most of my driving is in traffic or mway.
could ask the garage to do a compression test
oil could be leak through worn piston and get burned
#14: Re: 180 Oil usage/smoke Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Wed Nov 17, 2010 2:06 am ---- Is an induction kit fitted? Any breather pipes blocked?
#15: Re: 180 Oil usage/smoke Author: sri16v, Location: WalesPosted: Wed Nov 17, 2010 11:49 am ---- doesnt the 180's owner manual mention about the engine using .5 of a litre every 1000 miles, or something around that figure?
I know mine uses a little between servicing, but mine does get driven hard.
