When my brake pads were almost down to the metal my stop and brake light would flash. This was because I had enough but not a loads of brake fluid. The warning was actually to tell me there was a "rapid drop in brake fluid level" But mechanicly this was just because the brake cylinders were pushing out a long way (due to there not being any pads so the distance needed to make contact with the disks was longer)
Or you could just take a wheel off and have a look. Or just wait until it starts grinding
