#1: Drive / Aux belt squeeky after replacement Author: maverick1984, Location: West Sussex PostPosted: Sat Nov 20, 2010 12:53 pm

Evening all,

I have just had the Auxilary belt replaced on my car but it is really noisey and squeeking.
I have been spraying a lot of WD40 on the top cog (sorry not sure of its name) and the noise has been going away but as soon as I leave the car and restart it up again a little while later the noise is back.
Is there a way of me fixing this myself?
I can take the car back to the mechanic but it will mean me not having the car for a day.

Adam

quite easy and even better if you have no air con, i did my 180 one last week and it only took half hour or so, just make a drawing before you take it of as somtime you may forget how it go,s on

no they have a self tention pully on them, little trick you can try is abit of greese as wd40 will go off but if it is fubberd then it will need replacing at one point but you said its been replaced? so the belt itself could be at fault or just worn out

when did you get it replaced?

A squeaky belt is not tensioned properly

Grease will cause the belt to slip, i've never heard of applying grease to an alternator drive belt before...............your spring loaded belt tensioner might need replacing due to loss of spring tension within its mechanism resulting in a too slack belt..

Hi,

I wasn't going to grease up the belt! I will grease up the "cog/wheel" and see how that goes. If it continues i will take it back to the mechanic and get him to sort it.

You won't be able to grease the tensioner/idler pulleys, they are fitted with sealed bearings and it's not possible to insert any grease!!. Why dont you let the mechanic sort it?..........you might do more harm than good.

Quick update.

It was the bearings. peugeot wanted in the region of £180 + VAT for the 2 pulleys. The mechanic said that that you can only get them at Peugeot so said that they are way too expensive.

So....

He took them off and put them in a saucepan of Oil and boiled it on his hob for a couple of hours. He refitted them and hey presto it worked!! There is now only a very very slight squek on startup (and that is me being very picky!)

There is a little tip there for you all. It only cost me a £20 drink for him!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

They won't last long, once a bearing gets noisy its terminal. Get new ones off ebay......£40 for the tensioner pully and less for the idler pulley.

Hi all,

Resurrecting the old thread with an update that might help someone in the future.

Just wanted to let you know that almost a year down the line the bearings are still good after the mechanics saucepan boil method!!
