Water Leaking + Erratic Running
-> 206 Problems

Hi Guys I'm new here, I have a 2005 1.4 and I have recently had several problem.
1, the heater matrix and radiator have both started to leak
2, there is a slight trace of white goo on the oil filler cap, it is very slight and only occurs when the engine is running.
3, it is ticking over at 1500rpm and keeps missing a beat or two.

I tried to do a compression test but my tester is too big, however all 4 plugs are clean (no carbon)

Could the head gasket cause the rad + matrix to burst?? but the strange thing is there is no pressure in the coolant tank even when the car is up to temp.

Can anybody point me to a free online workshop manual

Cheers

Is the coolant in the reservoir oily?, if it is, it is the head gasket failed.

Thanks panason1c, Its very rusty coloured and when you shine a torch in there is a multicoloured swirl like oil on a pond so I would say yes. I thought as much I just posted for a second oppinion really.

I take it these heads usually need skimming???

Skimming is not always necessary, have it checked for 'flatness' first.

Has it been overheating recently? Mine went on sunday and when i was talking about it to a mechanic, he said generally if its been overheating then there's a high risk that the head will have warped. Mine hasnt so im hoping when i take it off and get it measured for flatness it will be okay, but its got to come off so you may aswell get it checked and if it needs skimming its only about £60 to get it clean and skimmed.

with the weather as it has been perhaps there wasnt enough antifreeze in the coolant and it froze? That would cause the leaks.

Remember also that there is a limit as to how many times a head can be skimmed, so best not to have it skimmed if it doesnt need it.

I think it did freeze, the heater matrix has been leaking for a while so been topping it up with water. wasn't a big leak so car didnt overheat, but I think it all might be down to freezing cause it reached -10 here the week before last and the next day the car was completely dead, even the battery was dead.

I will strip it, flush it check for flatness on the head and I already have a new matrix, just need a rad and gasket set.

Thanks for the help Guys

I will let you know how I get on and what I find.

if thats true then id expect the block to be damaged around the water ways in the water jacket as water expands when frozen. So yeah its probably got a knackered head gasket at the very least.
