Hi

I cant check my oil as the dipstick is always covered in thin mud like oil . Which I thought was due to the dip stick seal breaking . Today I opened the oil cap and inside the cap it was full of yellow/white sludge also there was a little steam coming out of the oil filler hole . What does this mean? Ive heard this happens when the head gasket goes but my cars running fine.

Is it always there or just when the engine is still cold from a short journey?

FFS ! ! . . . Nah its like this all the time . Just serviced it last month the plugs were white so running lean and hot . Its started getting hotter than normal . The coolant is a very dark green . And just noticed when idling the exhaust quietly pops now and again missfiring maybe?

So what should I do . Even though it seems fine I guess it would be foolish to ignore it?

Ok a good garage is hard to find though lol . I thought it was because of the loose dipstick but seems to be alot of gunk just for that .

thats pricey, try using engine flush and changing oil, if you havnt changed oil for long time the oil can look like that from condensation, if you not losing coolant change your oil.

head gasket £250.00
with cam belt extra £150.00

my GT had this problem last winter solved the problem, with a 600 mile round trip and a full oil change and flush, to get rid of any emulsified oil. and since then no problems

You can proberbly put a new engine in it with less miles and would still cost less

Would a compresion test with one of those gauges that screw into the spark plug holes be able to diagnose if the headgaskets gone? . . . If so has anyone done a compresion test before?

i had one done, diidnt tell me much info, i was told that there was no compression in cylinder 4. they said they dont know what it is for sure without taking it apart

it will tell you if you got a fault with the head, if there is a fault you will defo have to take the head off, try it mate

Jus looked in the haynes and it says (when doing a compresion test) low compresion on the 1st stroke which does not build up pressure during sucsessive strokes indicates leaking valves or blown head gasket .
Then goes on to say . A low reading from 2 adjacent cylinders is almost certainly due to the head gasket having blown between them .
So im going to try get it preasure tested and let you guys know the results.

A compression test doesnt always tell the whole story......there is a varying range of 'symptoms' when a HG fails, all depending at what point the gasket has failed at..............if the HG has failed at a point between the water jacket and an oilway (as sounds the case for your car) you will get 'oily coolant' and 'mayonaise' in the engine but the compression readings will show as 'normal' due to no leakage of compression.

what if a compression test failed on 1 cylinder yet the oil and coolant etc looked fine?

That would most likely be a valve that has failed (burnt out) or a valve spring broken.
