Misfire at 2500rpm from cold.

hello..
ive had a search on this site and have found nothing..
i have a 2000 reg 206 1.4 glx with a rather strange problem.
It has been running perfectly for months, but this morning i started it up while i scrapped the ice from my widows and it sounded like normal..
When i got in it and pulled away i reached 2500rpm in 1st gear and the car was shuddering/misfiring and wouldnt rev any higher.. I pulled over and revved it stationary, and the same, at 2500rpm it misfires but it i can now rev through it. It revs fine above 2500rpm. I continued to drive to work short shifting, but when the engine warmed up, it was all ok again. Revved perfectly. I get no management light coming on either.
I put it down to a glitch, but it did the same when i started it up to come home..
Im guessing at a coil pack, but anyone else heard of this?
Its completely standard and has been looked after.
thanks for any help that i may get..

just an update to this, my problem was a waterleak at the thermostat housing, which was dripping onto the crank sensor and basically fooked it..
replaced and all is good again..
