#1: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: troy, Location: llanelliPosted: Thu Dec 16, 2010 2:31 pm ---- the other day i turned my ignition on and the speedo jumped to about 30mph and ever since it has sat at5mph, also the handbrake warning beep comes on when you put it up when stationary which is obviously related.
i also drove about 50 miles the other day and when i got to my destination the milage has only gone up 2miles on the trip and on the milage.
just incase it matters my n/s front abs ring is cracked and the light has been on for a while but i shouldnt have thought this would have affected the speedo when standing.
any ideas as the diagnostic brings up nothing
#2: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Thu Dec 16, 2010 2:39 pm ---- Cluster is f****d i would say
#3: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: Iain, Location: Aberdeen, ScotlandPosted: Thu Dec 16, 2010 2:41 pm ---- I thought some 206's (I don't remember which) used the ABS sensor as the input for your speedo? Either way it should be fixed as soon as possible really, so you'll find out if that was the issue.
If I'm wrong, which I probably am, I think there's a sensor on/attached/whatever to the gearbox. Could check the soldering behind the cluster as well (Basically what Lee said).
Have you tried searching? I'm pretty sure there's been similar problems.
#4: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: troy, Location: llanelliPosted: Thu Dec 16, 2010 5:33 pm ---- ye, i have searched but couldnt find anything. im goin to have a quick look at the cluster tommoorow.
strange thing is when you turn the ignition completely off the speed doesnt go down to zero, but i have disconected the battery and that drops it down to 0, but as soon as you reconect and put the ignition on it comes back to 5mph.
verry strange
#5: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: panason1c, Location: SomersetPosted: Fri Dec 17, 2010 2:28 am ---- Try a full bsi reset (do a search for details)
#6: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: troy, Location: llanelliPosted: Fri Dec 17, 2010 7:25 am ---- iv done a search, has anyone got a link for the bsi reset, cant seem to find it anywhere
#7: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: panason1c, Location: SomersetPosted: Fri Dec 17, 2010 7:30 am ---- Put the driver's window down, lift the bonnet and ensure all equipment is switched off.
Ensure all doors are closed and remove key from the ignition.
Wait for 3 minutes, disconnect the vehicle battery and wait 15 seconds.
Reconnect the vehicle battery, wait a further 10 seconds (do not open doors.).
Switch on the side lights through the driver's window.
Switch on the ignition and check system's functionality.
Hold lock button on key down for 10 seconds.
Remove key open & close door test central locking system.
Start the engine and complete the system's check.
#8: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: troy, Location: llanelliPosted: Fri Dec 17, 2010 7:31 am ---- lifesaver, il try that in a minute, just drove round now and my airbag light came on, switched car off then on and it was off.
these french things are s**te arnt they.
#9: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: mjsroofing, Location: south walesPosted: Fri Dec 17, 2010 7:32 am ---- open drivers window and bonnet. start engine, turn engine off, remove key, get out of car and close door. leave the car alone for 5 mins dont open a door or any thing, disconnect the battery, leave for 5 mins, dont touch ant thing. reconnect battery, put your arm through window and turn on side lights, you will hear a dong then start engine.
you beat me to it Last edited by mjsroofing on Fri Dec 17, 2010 7:34 am; edited 1 time in total
#10: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Fri Dec 17, 2010 7:33 am ---- It's non-plexed. So just d/c the battery will do it.
#11: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: troy, Location: llanelliPosted: Fri Dec 17, 2010 7:36 am ---- no its plexed, 04 plate buddy.
#12: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Fri Dec 17, 2010 7:38 am ---- ahh, thought it looked like a w-reg on the avatar

#15: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: troy, Location: llanelliPosted: Fri Dec 17, 2010 8:30 am ---- i didnt hear a dong, is this normal, everything is exactly the same as before. if it didnt dong i take it that it needs doing again is it?
#16: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: mjsroofing, Location: south walesPosted: Fri Dec 17, 2010 8:37 am ---- i think so, just make sure that nothing is opened etc between removing the key, disconnecting the battery and turning on the side lights
#17: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: troy, Location: llanelliPosted: Wed Dec 22, 2010 1:24 pm ---- tried a bsi reset again and it still hasnt helped. here is a picture to show where the speedo is sitting at the moment.
#18: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: MrBSI, Location: What's it to you? ? ?Posted: Wed Dec 22, 2010 1:29 pm ---- You tried unplugging the instrument cluster for a few seconds?
#19: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: troy, Location: llanelliPosted: Wed Dec 22, 2010 1:32 pm ---- ye have tried that, when i unplug it and plug it back in its exactly the same. is there a way to re-calibrate them as i know there is on renaults?
#20: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: MrBSI, Location: What's it to you? ? ?Posted: Wed Dec 22, 2010 1:34 pm ---- How many miles has the cluster done?
Is it running the latest BSI software from Peugeot?
#21: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: troy, Location: llanelliPosted: Wed Dec 22, 2010 1:40 pm ---- cluster has done just over 50k i have no idea what software the bsi is running, how do you find out ?
#22: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: MrBSI, Location: What's it to you? ? ?Posted: Wed Dec 22, 2010 1:44 pm ---- This really needs a scan with Peugeot Planet diagnostic software.
You could also try another cluster if you can find a lower mileage one.
#23: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: troy, Location: llanelliPosted: Wed Dec 22, 2010 2:05 pm ---- il give it another scan with my snap on ethos when im back in work but i doubt it will do much.
just to confirm, you do agree that the dial is over the 0mph mark do you? lol
#24: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: MrBSI, Location: What's it to you? ? ?Posted: Wed Dec 22, 2010 2:10 pm ---- Your wasting your time using a Snap On Ethos to scan this.
You need to use Peugeot Planet
#25: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: troy, Location: llanelliPosted: Wed Dec 22, 2010 4:09 pm ---- is peugeot planet the system they use in peugeot? as i can see that it is able to download off the internet, do you know if i was to download this then how would i connect the car to the pc, is there a usb-eobd socket lead?
#26: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: panason1c, Location: SomersetPosted: Thu Dec 23, 2010 1:10 am ---- I would drive the car and use a sat-nav to check the accuracy of the speedo at varying speeds, if is very close to what the sat-nav reads then i wouldnt worry about it. However, if the speedo is showing 5 mph too fast at any given speed then it could be the speedo needle has come loose on its spindle and just needs manually repositioning (strip the cluster down).

Yes.
#28: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: troy, Location: llanelliPosted: Thu Dec 23, 2010 9:38 am ---- ok so i plugged my works ethos in today and i have the folowing eorrs
engine- vehicle speed
air mass (now replaced)
abs- vehicle speed
left front sensor and/or ring (ring is cracked being replaced 28th)
airbag- vehicle speed
im guessing something is going wrong with the vehicle speed, im going to replace the abs ring when i go back to work and then contact peugeot then.
#29: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: MrBSI, Location: What's it to you? ? ?Posted: Thu Dec 23, 2010 9:39 am ---- So are the airbag & abs warning lights on then?
Speedo takes its signal from n/s front ABS sensor
#30: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: troy, Location: llanelliPosted: Thu Dec 23, 2010 9:45 am ---- abs light is on and the airbag light also came on yesterday. im going to replace the ring but i cant see that the speedo will zero by itself. once i replace the sensor i will try a bsi reset again
#31: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: MrBSI, Location: What's it to you? ? ?Posted: Thu Dec 23, 2010 9:50 am ---- The left front ABS sensor ( the one thats faulty on your car ) is the one that tells the speedo how fast the car is moving.
Replace the cracked ring, erase the fault codes in the BSI memory & the speedo should then work fine.
#32: Re: car reading 5mph when at stop Author: troy, Location: llanelliPosted: Thu Dec 23, 2010 9:52 am ---- ok, cheers for your help. il let you know how i get on.
