I guess it might depend on how long the glow plugs stay on, I assume maybe incorrectly that they turn off as soon as the engine fires up.
The glow plugs on hdi's (and most modern diesels) continue to work for a minute or so after the engine has started for 'cleaner' emissions reasons.
