One Key ... Doh!
-> 206 Problems

#1: One Key ... Doh! Author: xpda, Location: J17 M6 Cheshire PostPosted: Thu Jan 06, 2011 1:55 am

Purchased 206 (X reg) for the wife.

It only came with one key (not the remote key) ....but no key codes to get another one cut.

I did not realise they were such a nightmare when this problem occurs.

Can anyone help out with getting the transponder code and maybe the mechanical key cut code I need - and where to get such a key cut and coded?

Checked the Stealer route and it sounds a right lot of hoops to jump through & £160+

Pm Lee, he should be able to get all this information for you from your VIN number Smile

Standard non remote key is around £20 supplied & cut BUT it also needs to be coded to the car to start it.

If you haven't got the 4 digit transponder code & also the key cut code then Peugeot will provide them for a small charge.

You need the V5C logbook & also photo id before Peugeot will issue:
Transponder codes.
Key codes.
A key.

PM Lee with the 17 digit VIN number for the car & ask him nicely as sometimes he can get hold of the codes for you Wink

Many thanks Mrs_Howey & MrBSI

Comments appreciated greatly - do not want to get totally stuck by loosing/breaking the one key.

I shall PM Lee and see what he can do - I noticed in some other posts that he had offered to find the codes for others but I felt a bit cheeky PMing him directly.

Anyway shall do that now.

Again many thanks for the responses Mr. Green

I have PM'd Lee, but...

The PM remains in my OutBox - it has not moved to my Sent Box

I am not sure if this is correct?

Does it only move to my SentBox after Lee is online to receive it or have I done something wrong?

When Lee has read the PM, it will move to your sent box Wink

Lee - you are truely a star man Thumb Up

Many thanks for your help.

Now then with this information do I simply go to Peugoet or is there a cheaper way?

What should I expect to pay?

Key - cgi.ebay.co.uk/Peugeot...1230wt_905

Key blade - cgi.ebay.co.uk/PEUGEOT...5d2ce16640

Take it to a autolock smith and they should cut the key blade and recode the transponder chip.

EDIT: Let me just double check thats possible.

Ah - I see - you buy a 2nd hand key, get a new blade and get a lock smith to recode the key and cut the blade

Its starting to make sense now

You can't get the transponder chip recoded, unfortunately

Many thanks for checking

At least I have the codes.

So i guess it has to be from Peugeot?

Try places like this - angellocksmiths.co.uk/...ponder.php

Wicked - thanks again for your time Mr. Green

They seem to have a write up about the pre and post 2001 models and variations in keys so looks hopeful

Razz

They also have details on pricing

I'll remember that Laughing

Just find websites and information from the past and save them, or when I find new, save them for future reference Smile

Yes I do that - particularly for problems like this.

I shall post back here to let others know how it goes.

Hello Everyone, Been looking around for a few days now and seems a really nice forum, so 'Hi' Smile

Hate to make my first post a question, hopefully it's a "top of your head" one but I cant find the answer from google.

I was wondering... you can buy used keys from ebay for about £7, if I bought a two button one that's as old as my car (1998 LX) could I program the remote to my central locking and use my existing transponder key for the ignition and probably just cut/snap off the key blade in the remote key.

Many thanks, Lewis (and if anyone has any computer questions i'd be happy to help :P)

You can buy a second hand key off eBay, however you need to transfer the transponder chip from your old key into the new one or buy a new transponder chip and get it coded to match you system.

I dont mind using my existing transponder key for the ignition, i assume that will still work, just use the new key as a fob.

Assuming that'll work can i get a more modern looking 206 key or would it be best to stick with one the same age of the car?

Many thanks again x

You need the same key as what you currently have, any other key won't work.

What is the problem? Have you only got one key?

Sorry, Didn't explain my situation very well.

The car came with 2 keys but neither of them are plip keys, my main goal is to get the remote central locking working, so would buy a key from ebay, program it for car, then use my existing key in the ignition.

Means carrying 2 keys around with me but it'll do till i've paid off my insurance and can start looking at improvements for it Smile

I was trying to check if there's any particular key i'd need to buy or will any 206 key be able to be pre-programmed to the central locking?

Cheers, Lewis

You'll need to configure the BSI and locking system to install remote central locking.

Easiest way would be to install a aftermarket central locking system.

Even though the car already has remote central locking? there's a bit in the hand book about reprogramming a key...

ahh right sorry. You should still need to get the key coded to the BSI tho. As when you look at the configuration, pilp key is listed.

Whats your chassis number? I'll have a look to see if you had one of those keys when it left the factory.

it he says that the key i have is for the older 206s pre 02, mine is an 03 plate?
