#1: Fitting coilovers? Author: drunknmunky, Location: Blackburn and CatterickPosted: Thu Jan 13, 2011 7:55 am ---- Anyone got a good how to on fitting coilovers? Thinking of doing some this weekend but cant quite understand how to set them up and how the old suspension comes off?
The trouble im having is that they are height adjustable but i dont know what height to set them too and how you can tell what to set them too? Its just a strut with a spring and a rubber boot and you have to cut the boot i think as its massive and also the spring seat moves up and down and i dont undestand which way to move it to set it up right?
thanks in advance

it is pretty straight forward
#3: Re: Fitting coilovers? Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Thu Jan 13, 2011 12:00 pm ---- Something says you'll need help. and a few new nuts and bolts as they shouldn't be reused.
#4: Re: Fitting coilovers? Author: macj, Location: EssexPosted: Thu Jan 13, 2011 12:23 pm ---- Its fairly straight forward if you remember how it all comes to bits with the old stuff.... The lower spring platform is your height adjustment.... move it up and you raise the car.... then measure the first one and move the other to the same spot to level the car.... unless your a track fan then you need to add some height to the O/S to compensate for the drivers weight..... now your confused
#5: Re: Fitting coilovers? Author: drunknmunky, Location: Blackburn and CatterickPosted: Thu Jan 13, 2011 12:51 pm ---- im not really needing much help i used to do car mechanics at college qualified to level 2 and took plenty of struts out and that its just been a while and i have never had a play with coilovers and just dont understand what height to set it to to start with as i dont want it too low but dont want it too high if you get what i mean :/
and no im not much of a track day guy never really used it on the track its mainly for looks
ill get some pics in a second and see if you can shed some light on what to do with them
#6: Re: Fitting coilovers? Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Thu Jan 13, 2011 12:55 pm ---- Just set the spring seat mid way along the strut...suck it and see.
#7: Re: Fitting coilovers? Author: drunknmunky, Location: Blackburn and CatterickPosted: Thu Jan 13, 2011 1:04 pm ---- heres some pics
why is one of the top bits pushed right in and the other sticks out a lot should they not both be the same?
sorry bout the crap quality taken on my phone as i left my digi cam charger at work
#8: Re: Fitting coilovers? Author: Seabook, Posted: Thu Jan 13, 2011 1:09 pm ---- is just because the strut is not fully lifted. you don't have to cut the dust shield.
the silver one is the top spring pan. you will need to use oem top mount
btw, how come it is pink! lol
#9: Re: Fitting coilovers? Author: drunknmunky, Location: Blackburn and CatterickPosted: Thu Jan 13, 2011 1:13 pm ---- any advice on where to seat the spring to start with and also once seated can i move it to go lower without having to take the whole thing off the car?
how will i fully lift the strut then or does it not matter about that?
it said in the instructions with them that i would have to cut it off :/ i dont really want to though tbh so i will take your advice and not cut it off
i understood that i would have to use oem top mount just hope all my bits and bobs are alright like my bearing and that i cant really afford to fork out on new top mounts to fit them to, i should be okay using the old ones shouldnt i? they have only covered 28,000 miles
#10: Re: Fitting coilovers? Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Thu Jan 13, 2011 1:14 pm ---- Do they have internal bumpstops?
#11: Re: Fitting coilovers? Author: drunknmunky, Location: Blackburn and CatterickPosted: Thu Jan 13, 2011 1:18 pm ---- not as far as i know :/
but i have a link to the guide lines to fitting them and it says they would be supplied if they are needed
#12: Re: Fitting coilovers? Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Thu Jan 13, 2011 1:21 pm ---- Those silver top spring seats with replace the old ones. On the picture below the bearing and standard spring seat are fitted together, you'll need to separate yours.
Have a look in here, Page 15 and 16 roughly. If you've not done the suspension on a 206 they might be helpful. They were from a 'How to' I did on the old 206 info site before it died.
#13: Re: Fitting coilovers? Author: Seabook, Posted: Thu Jan 13, 2011 1:22 pm ---- i doubt they will have internal bumpstop as they are not inverted strut, but you can always use the oem one.

and when you remove the bearing from the spring seat, 9 out of 10 you will distroy the bearing
#15: Re: Fitting coilovers? Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Thu Jan 13, 2011 1:25 pm ---- Mine popped out nicely. But that's because I was fitting new ones. If you don't have new ones your old ones will fall apart. It's just the way it is...
#16: Re: Fitting coilovers? Author: drunknmunky, Location: Blackburn and CatterickPosted: Thu Jan 13, 2011 1:26 pm ---- so i defo need some new bearings then?
how much should i be looking to pay for these?
#17: Re: Fitting coilovers? Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Thu Jan 13, 2011 1:27 pm ---- Have a look on Euro Car Parts...could fit new top mounts. They seem to be about £60 ish these days. New bolts too and gearbox oil...the costs add up when doing it properly. DOn't forget to find a way to pull the hub off the wishbone ball joint...(see my pictures).
#18: Re: Fitting coilovers? Author: drunknmunky, Location: Blackburn and CatterickPosted: Thu Jan 13, 2011 1:32 pm ---- why gearbox oil? and bolts surely the old ones will do? i dont really have the money to be going doing all that and im pretty sure the garage i took it to before werent going to replace all these bits with the £180 that i was going to pay for them to fit them so im guessing they werent planning on doing any of this stuff :/
so is it really necessary to get new or can i manage on the old ones really? dont forget it is more for looks than anything i dont plan on running it round a track after
#19: Re: Fitting coilovers? Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Thu Jan 13, 2011 1:39 pm ---- Whether for looks or track use you still don't want things falling off!
Nyloc nuts aren't supposed to be re-used and the nylon liner can sometimes fall out of the nut. I'm sure the garage wouldn't refit one that did though. Old crusty bolts sometimes need to be cut off too. I'd buy some new droplinks as well as they are definately best if replaced.
When the nearside strut is remove the driveshaft tends to come out leading to oil escaping.
Gearbox oil is a 75W80. I'd check that's the right because it's important to put the right grade in it, otherwise the gearchange becomes awful. Again there's some pictures of the correct oil in my Photobucket album. Last edited by Edward on Thu Jan 13, 2011 1:41 pm; edited 1 time in total

because you need to pop the driving shaft out
all self-locking nuts are not recommanded to re-use

i understand what you mean with the nuts and that now thanks
looks like im going to be waiting a bit before i fit these as i need to buy a lot more bits then
