#1: Head gasket seal leak? Author: Mike PostPosted: Tue Jan 18, 2011 11:34 am

I've had a small but persistent oil leak on the Pug and have been told by a mechanic that it's possibly the 'head gasket seal' as they're prone to failure on the TU engines.

Am I right in thinking he's referring to what others call the 'rocker cover seal'? The rubber seal that sits at the bottom of the rocker cover and are they prone to leaking or is he just fobbing me off?

Cheers.

I think the TU engine leak he was refering to is the h/g water leak from the front right as you look at it.

If its leaking oil from the top of the engine then its going to be the rocker gasket mate

Ah ok kool.

To be honest I have no idea where it's leaking from! It's making a mess of the driveway is all I know. Last time it was on the ramp I looked up fro the bottom and it's leaking from somewhere up at the top. Looked at the rocker cover seal when I open the bonnet and it does look like it's got a little bit of oil on it so thinking it may well be that!

just for a heads up its not uncommon on the TU's with steel sumps for the sump to become porous. Had a few where a mysterious oil leak was developing and wouldn't go away, and turned out to be seeping through the sump (due to barely visible corrosion.

Valve cover gaskets are cheap enough to buy and a piece of piddle to fit, just dont overtighten the two nuts

Cheer, something else to look at! To be honest my rocker cover is a state anyway so going to replace that and the seal so that will eliminate that as an option anyway Smile

What engine size is it. On some pug engines there is a common head gasket oil leak on the front left side if the engine.

I've seen it on loads of 1.1 and 1.4

It's a 1.4 8v Smile

Can you show me on the picture below where you're meaning please:

Are we talking just above the power steering top below the rocker cover seal?

no mate thats your rocker cover gasket, you head gasket is just below the exhaust manifold, you need to take all the head off to replace it.

Ah ok fair enough. Easy enough for someone to do? We talking rocker cover off etc? How much are the gaskets? Thanks.

its a bit job so to say, cam belt, both manifolds, coolant pipes and rocker cover off bout 3-4hr job probs about £300 - £400 at a garage to do the headgasket

Cheers. Not sure if just to leave it or not to be honest. The head gasket itself hasn't failed in the sense that there is no smoke at the back, no 'mayo' and the spark plugs haven't' got fluid in so may leave it.

Or I get a new headgasket on it while I' in a position to be able to and I can rest assured it's decent again..

If its just leaking oil just leave it and keep eye on level from time to time,

That's what I did. Mine never developed to head gasket failure just topped up the oil every so often.
