The fan should kick in if thats the case though

The car temp gauge goes a bit higher when stationary or slow uphill driving, comes down fine when driving normal again. Never overheats. The fan come son when temp shoots up. I haven't checked the radiator hoses, but the engine doesn't feel hot after the temp has shot up. Sometimes the temp gauge comes down again a few seconds after it shot up.
I haven't taken the car for a longer drive for a while, so I am not sure if the problem is still there. I think it's time for a good 60 minute trip.
