#1: Increasing MPG Author: army-joe, Location: kentPosted: Sat Jan 22, 2011 2:01 pm ---- Could changing the back box decrease MPG by 10 miles??
Quick simple question. Thank youuu
#2: Re: Increasing MPG Author: tomd0801754, Location: MoscowPosted: Sat Jan 22, 2011 2:03 pm ---- Depends. Unlikely but it probably could. When was it last serviced?
#3: Re: Increasing MPG Author: army-joe, Location: kentPosted: Sat Jan 22, 2011 2:11 pm ---- Hmmmmm, i think about 5 months ago. what should i replace do you reckon? Im trying to get the most out of my car fuel wise.. I got a 4" peco n thinking about going back to standard box to increase the MPG. I dont even drive heavy footed either.
#4: Re: Increasing MPG Author: Rich196, Posted: Sat Jan 22, 2011 2:46 pm ---- i could swear i have heard a couple of people on here, saying new standard exhaust systems or just back boxes have affect their mpg for the worse
#5: Re: Increasing MPG Author: army-joe, Location: kentPosted: Sat Jan 22, 2011 2:48 pm ---- Rich196/ what u mean? that aftermarket ones have decreased the MPG??
#6: Re: Increasing MPG Author: JJ0063, Location: NorfolkPosted: Sat Jan 22, 2011 2:55 pm ---- I just removed a 4" slash cut from my 1.4 & replaced it with a 2nd hand standard box, my MPG is now improving! and car feels SLIGHTLY quicker now its got some back pressure!
#7: Re: Increasing MPG Author: army-joe, Location: kentPosted: Sat Jan 22, 2011 2:57 pm ---- JJ0063/ by how much difference is it improving? Im seriously thinking about going back to standard but i dont want a pea shooter of an exhaust
#8: Re: Increasing MPG Author: west1, Location: SouthamptonPosted: Sat Jan 22, 2011 3:02 pm ---- they would do as the goverment is co2 mad so it could be something to do with that.
#9: Re: Increasing MPG Author: JJ0063, Location: NorfolkPosted: Sat Jan 22, 2011 3:05 pm ---- Well, I used to get 44 miles to £10 @ £1.25pl, so roughly 23mpg (I know..)
I brimmed my tank £55 @ £126.6,, still have half a tank left and have done 194 miles..
havent sat down to work out figures but so far to me that seems better, & the first 40 miles were with the old exhaust!
Cheers
#10: Re: Increasing MPG Author: army-joe, Location: kentPosted: Sat Jan 22, 2011 3:13 pm ---- JJ0063/ thats a lot better that aint it. and is that with your standard exhaust? not a gti one or any thing
#11: Re: Increasing MPG Author: JJ0063, Location: NorfolkPosted: Sat Jan 22, 2011 3:16 pm ---- seems it so far! when my light comes on i'll do the mpg calculations & report back, but yeah im sure i didnt get much more than what ive done now, to a FULL tank before!
it's a standard 1.4 pea shooter exhaust, thinking about cutting tip short & welding the end can from my old exhaust over the top, so in theory still looking like the slash cut but without the noise etc
#12: Re: Increasing MPG Author: DJ-, Location: UKPosted: Sat Jan 22, 2011 3:17 pm ---- what exhaust did you have before jj0063?
#13: Re: Increasing MPG Author: JJ0063, Location: NorfolkPosted: Sat Jan 22, 2011 3:18 pm ---- Im not sure on the make but it was a 4 inch slash cut japcan style, i'll find a pic of it on the car if you like?
#14: Re: Increasing MPG Author: army-joe, Location: kentPosted: Sat Jan 22, 2011 3:21 pm ---- that is actually a good idea cutting it off then welding it back on the standard one. it wont look stupid will it.
#15: Re: Increasing MPG Author: JJ0063, Location: NorfolkPosted: Sat Jan 22, 2011 3:22 pm ---- Backbox I just removed:
#16: Re: Increasing MPG Author: DJ-, Location: UKPosted: Sat Jan 22, 2011 3:23 pm ---- Oh right i see. Looks in pretty bad state too tbh!
#17: Re: Increasing MPG Author: JJ0063, Location: NorfolkPosted: Sat Jan 22, 2011 3:24 pm ---- thats just the top coat peeling but yeah it needed some TLC! Considering cleaning it up, painting it & sticking it on ebay tbh!
#18: Re: Increasing MPG Author: army-joe, Location: kentPosted: Sat Jan 22, 2011 3:30 pm ---- Could you not cut the small one out n have the big one?

that's really bad it works out to just under 25mpg,24.8mpg roughly.still horrendous though.
i wouldn't of expected a back box to effect the mpg by a massive amount, certainly not by 10 miles.
#20: Re: Increasing MPG Author: Mike_XS, Location: SouthamptonPosted: Sun Jan 23, 2011 7:14 am ---- I've got a 3" Sportex on the back of my car and I'm still getting 35-37 mpg driving sensibly. If I boot it, having the Sportex on uses more fuel than the standard box.
#21: Re: Increasing MPG Author: army-joe, Location: kentPosted: Sun Jan 23, 2011 11:03 am ---- AsphericSmile - where did u get your exhaust from mate?

I will second that.
#23: Re: Increasing MPG Author: army-joe, Location: kentPosted: Sun Jan 23, 2011 11:31 am ---- Where u get them from?
#24: Re: Increasing MPG Author: -Dave-, Location: North ManchesterPosted: Sun Jan 23, 2011 11:42 am ---- www.sportex-exhausts.com/
You can get them a bit cheaper from Ebay but I preferred to pay a bit extra to make sure I was getting the right bits.
They are direct fit also so take the old one off, New one on no messing about.
#25: Re: Increasing MPG Author: army-joe, Location: kentPosted: Sun Jan 23, 2011 12:43 pm ---- nice one cheers

I got it off a guy off here. It's worth looking in the for sale section.
