I'm currently running on the more expensive Supermarket fuel.... and the first MPG was goddamn awful, although that was mostly Urban so possibly expected. But the rest of the week is Motorway miles so we'll see how it gets on!

If you look at the official figures and compare them to the 106 diesel, it suggests they're a bit better (which is plausible, given its a turbo and a bit more modern/efficient). However, my previous car, a 1998 106 1.5 diesel, consistently achieved around 60mpg, the best being 63.5mpg and the worst being 58.1. That was mainly on A roads and sometimes urban areas, with the occasional motorway run. Sometimes I'd be late for work so I'd be putting my foot down, at other times I'd change up gear early in an effort to get best economy. But after a few tank fulls I soon realised that driving style didn't really have that much effect on mpg, so I stopped worrying about it and just drove it, knowing that if I did put my foot down, it wouldn't make that much difference. Granted its not the fastest car in the world, but it was fine in traffic etc and never really struggled; and also granted its a little bit smaller/lighter than a 206 (but not much).

I always zero the trip meter when I fill up and usually fill up with around £60 of diesel when the fuel light comes on. Mileage obtained is from 505 to 540 so by my reckoning, which may be wrong .. at 135.9p per litre and 44 litres, I get between 52.2 and 55.8 mpg which is driving to & from work along A roads everyday.

Not overly good that condsidering it says it should be doing 44mpg, its a 1.4 8V btw.

My TU3 206 does around 33.6 mpg average acording to the trip computer, im more then happy with that due to the way its operated
Cost me just over £57 the other day to fill the tank after the light came on

Buy a diesel then if it bothers you.
Its a GTI, its NOT built for fuel economy.
