Excessive fuel usage
-> 206 Problems

#1: Excessive fuel usage Author: kerry, Location: Somerset PostPosted: Fri Jan 28, 2011 6:31 am
    ----
Hello I have a peugeot 206 1.4 8v petrol 53 plate it had to have a new centre and box box exhaust last October since then it is using fuel badly i have an app on ipod to keep record of mpg etc and it is coming out as 25 mpg but use to be up in the 35-40 ish . This week it has cost me £15.00 to do 64 miles !!!!
Have had car plugged into Snap-on computer reader and it is showing no faults codes at all.
It is idling erratically when cold but it fine when it warms up. car has full service history when i bought it 10 months ago i have had new spark plugs fitted and oil and filter change in August car drives like a dream, it has done 87,000 miles.
I would be so grateful for any advice on what could be the matter with it as not got loads of money to throw at it, but need to put it right if i can find out what is it.
.Thankyou Kerry

I do quite a lot of short journeys but taking it on a run ie 50 miles makes no difference to the amount of fuel it uses, ipod still saying 25 mpg and before anyone asks i'm not heavy footed !! lol
It dles bewteem 800 and 1200 when cold.

Its had a wurth fuel cleaner in september made no difference to it.
Ipod has an app that you put in the milage, fill the car up then keep it full and every time to go to the garage you put milage, how many litres cost per litre and it keeps a graph and chart of mpg for you and works out how much a mile the car cost to run. Its called "gas log".

regular shell is the fuel save. The 8v engines aren't great on mpg. I have the 1.4 16v and get around 45mpg motorway or 30 mpg town. I wouldnt trust the ipod app i personally would go by the trip computer instead. Best thing to try is changing your driving style such cp when you change gear or breakin etc. Unfortunately pug 1.4's are thirsty engines.

You used caps. That suggests shouting. Therefore, that's not nice. Maybe you should take note of this.

your both as bad as eachother lol.

(you would get better mpg in a daewoo matiz though Laughing )

on a side note the engine does not idle higher when cold to "warm up faster" LOL

its because when an engine is cold there is a lower amont of vaporisation when fuel enters the cylinder. more fuel is needed for combustion. hence when it does ignite the revs are slightly higher.

Smile im just stating if your so sad enough to count mpg on a tiny engined 206 you need to think smaller,

I've always normally had nice sporty cars ie Escort cosworth, Audi A4 tdi, Peugeot 406 executive, now got this 206 which was might to be a cheap to run around in and its not at all, quite disappointing really because with all the other fast car i haven't minded putting the fuel in because they've been fun to drive but they were better on fuel than this lol
