#1: Bought my 1st 206 today, steering/pulling problem?? Author: gazberg, Location: Birmingham UK PostPosted: Sat Jan 29, 2011 10:38 am

Hi all.

Newbie to these boards and car issues in general.

Bit of background, passed test June 2010. Got a 2001 Fiesta Ztec 16v as my first car.

Car was brilliant, never had a single issue with it. Decembr 2010, lady fails to stop at junction and smashes into my passenger side wheel and door. Car wrote off. Insurance dealt with.

Went to car auction today and picked up a lovely (so it seems/ed) silver 206 1.4 glx 2001. 10 months MOT and taxed. Bodywork immaculate and under the bonnet everything good. Sold as 'no mechanical defect' by the auction comany.

However as auction didn't get chance to test drive it. Not long after driving it, once i had built up some speed it felt like the steering was slihgtly twitching evey now and again, sometimes to the left, sometimes to the right.

Now i'll be honest, knowing nothing about cars this scared me a little as never had anything like this happen.

Anyway got home, checked tyre PSI, they were around 20/22 so bumped them up now to around 32psi. Not sure what the correct PSI should be, they are 195/45/15r's. Took it out again, the 'twitching' was less but still could feel it once i got upto around 30mph.

I'm just hoping anyone could offer advice as i'm sitting here worried i've blown my insurance payout on a crap car. Spoke to my dad (he's a DIY car fiend) and he reckons most likely nothing to worry about, probably need tracking re-doing or wheels balanced.

Anyone ever had this kind of issue in there 206? I'd be gutted if this is a wreck as i've always wanted a 206

get wheels re-balanced and tracking checked/adjusted should cure it and probably talking about £75 to be done at a garage
also just check the tyres arnt out of shape and are you sure they are 195/45/15 thats too low a profile really wont make much of a difference but most 206's running 15"s with 195 tyres are 50 or 55 profile

steering rack could have some play in it normally if the tracking is out it would only pull one way and be alot worse when you accelerate

It is worth checking all the bushed on the suspension too - lower arm or track rod end could do this - mine did it with a faulty lower arm bush.

If it's a steering rack/bush issue are either of these pricey?

Ok i could live with that, was expecting this kinda issue to be something that makes the car beyond econimical repair.

Thanks guys. Hopefully it is one of the above issues and not something about £500

Sorry to bump this back up. Was going to take it to the local garage today but i've realised there is no locking bolt release key with the car.

It's got Wolfrace Street octane's on. Rang all my local wolfrace dealers they can't help, rang Wolfrace themselves and they said unless i know which specific key it is or have the packaging they can't help either.
Any ideas what i can use because the garages won't do it unless they have something to take them off with.

To top it off some d**khead has already scratched my passenger doors and smashed the psg door mirror off. Nightmare start to owning this car.
