#1: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: kevinkeady, Location: LondonPosted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 11:14 am ---- Hi team.
I recently bought a Peugeot 206 1.4 2002 Reg and have noticed that the majority of lights don't illuminate on the instrument panel / speedo dash when the engine is turned on.
As per usual, when you turn on the ignition, the lights illuminate for a certain period of time, then they turn off once the engine is running.
I took the instrument panel out expecting to see a few bulbs which have gone but noticed that there are no bulbs at all, but a circuit board, attached with tiny 'inbuilt LED's' (sorry for the bad explanation but I'm not too sure how else to explain it!)
Does anyone know how to fix this? I assume the lights illuminate to ensure that if there was a problem when driving, these lights would be able to alert the driver.
To give an example, the red STOP light is one which does not illuminate once the key is turned in the ignition.
Does anybody know if there are certain fuses for certain lights? LED?
Sorry if this has already been posted or answered. I did search but couldn't find an answer.
Any information on this would be really appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Kevin.

#3: Re: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: Dabamash, Location: The car in frontPosted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 11:18 am ---- Moved to problems section.
It's possible some LED's have gone, but seems unlikely. It's not a massive job to replace them if they are.
#4: Re: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: kevinkeady, Location: LondonPosted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 11:20 am ---- Hey
thanks for replying so quickly!
my car doesnt actually have a dashboard dimming option.
I know where abouts your referring to as I've seen a 206 which does.
Also. about 5 or 6 lights illuminate when the engine starts, and they are fully illuminated, and not dim.
Thanks though!
any other suggestions!?
#5: Re: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: kevinkeady, Location: LondonPosted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 11:23 am ---- Thanks Dabamash
Sorry for posting in the wrong section!
Also it seems like some experience in circuitry or soldering would be needed to change these?
or am I wrong?
If it seems unlikely would it be an issue somewhere else in the car?
#6: Re: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: NICKST, Location: Little hulton (worsley)Posted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 11:59 am ---- Have you try adjusting the brightness with the little pin near the fuel gauge press and hold.
#7: Re: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: Steve206, Location: UKPosted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 12:47 pm ---- As mentioned above, the left hand pin in the display adjusts the brightness, does the stop light come on the first turn of the key? It only lights with the engine running if you have a fault.
#8: Re: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: davieboy86, Location: Kent,Posted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 1:27 pm ---- I kinda wanna know the same thing, when you turn the key once you get the battery lighting up, then on the second turn, what should light up? Airbag, what else?
Im in a 1.4 lx 2000 plate, sorry to hijack lol.
#9: Re: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: kevinkeady, Location: LondonPosted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 1:28 pm ---- Hi Nick180
Thanks for your response.
I have tried the pin next to the fuel gage and it only brightens or darkens the existing illuminated lights
Hi Steve206
Also, thanks
No, the STOP light does not come on at all when the ignition / engine is initially turned on, along with many other lights.
I've hosted two pictures below.
Picture 1 are the number of lights and what they are when my engine is started.
Picture 2 is from a friend of mines, a Peugeot 1007 and what lights appear when she starts her car.
I understand that its a different model, but the Instrument Panel lights are the same (when not illuminated) and I would assume the same instrument lights would illuminate when the engine starts.
#10: Re: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: Steve206, Location: UKPosted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 1:47 pm ---- Looks about right. I dont think you have ABS, Lee might be able to answer the stop light question.
#11: Re: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: kevinkeady, Location: LondonPosted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 1:56 pm ---- Really?
What about the oil light? passenger airbag light? (this comes on when I disable the passenger airbag) and shouldn't the stop light come on at this point as well?
Also... whos lee? (sorry I'm new!)
Thanks.
#12: Re: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 2:32 pm ---- In that picture the engine is running, so the stop light shouldn't be on. You have a airbag fault tho, and need it code read, you also need a service.
Could try and softboot the BSI to sort the fuel gauge problem
#13: Re: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: kevinkeady, Location: LondonPosted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 2:42 pm ---- Hi Lee
Thanks for responding.
In the picture, the engine has just been turned on, but it was hard for me to snap a picture just before the engine started. I can however, guarantee that the stop light does not come on at all, even when the key is turned just one.
Can I ask how can you tell that I have an Airbag fault? And how can you tell that I need a service?!
Thanks Lee.
#14: Re: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 2:57 pm ---- If the airbag light and eml light are staying on when then engine is running then there are faults. Plus if the service spanner is staying one, then you need a service shortly.
This is the start up procedure on a Mux 206
#15: Re: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: MrrNoName, Location: UKPosted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 3:12 pm ---- also see here for what lights should come on when:
had this question myself a while ago, some members answered it well
EDIT: lee's posted the same video already, nvrmind
#16: Re: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: kevinkeady, Location: LondonPosted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 4:02 pm ---- Hi MrrNoName
Thanks for posting
Lee - I made a video of the startup of my 206 as I think the picture I posted might be slightly misleading
Ive noticed in the video you posted, the following lights come on when the key is turned into the second position:
STOP
What looks like Passenger Airbag
And a light next to Passenger Airbag which I cant quite make out
Please could you have a look at this video and let me know what you think?
#17: Re: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 4:08 pm ---- That seems pretty normal, the SMD might have gone for the STOP light. But if that ever came on so would the handbrake light or the EML
#18: Re: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: kevinkeady, Location: LondonPosted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 4:11 pm ---- Thanks Lee.
Sorry but what is an SMD?
#20: Re: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: kevinkeady, Location: LondonPosted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 4:29 pm ---- Ah right.
Yea that was my initial thought...back when I thought there were bulbs in the instrument panel.
Do you know how easy they are to change? Are they soldered on?
When I took the Instrument panel off I noticed that each light has their own SMD... so would that explain the STOP light not coming on, but the Handbrake light coming on?
Also, you mentioed before that I may have an Airbag fault...
From looking at my video, do you still think this is the case?
Thanks alot Lee.
#21: Re: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 4:49 pm ---- Yeah they are soldered on. Each light has its own SMD.
Nah you don't have an airbag fault, from the initial picture I thought the airbag light was staying on but from the video it goes off so its all good
#22: Re: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: kevinkeady, Location: LondonPosted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 4:53 pm ---- Phew. Thats a relief!
How prone are the SMD's to die? Have you heard of this issue happening before?
Do you think that this is the problem in this case?
#23: Re: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 4:58 pm ---- Yeah they blow, they only have a lifetime like any other bulb. People change them to other colours as well.
If you are that worried, you could always get it fault code read and see if anything comes up.
#24: Re: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: kevinkeady, Location: LondonPosted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 5:01 pm ---- OK Great
Thanks Lee..
..From the link you sent me about the SMD's... I dont suppose you would know which one would be a replacement part?!
not to worry if you don't, you've been a great help anyway
cheers!
#25: Re: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: MrBSI, Location: What's it to you? ? ?Posted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 5:08 pm ---- Unplug the instrument cluster, give the plug a squirt of contact cleaner, connect it back up & try again.
You have warning lights on when you shouldnt have
Either its a dirty connection or a loss of CAN data.
Check the wiring connectors:
On the BSI:
Black 10 way connector. Terminal 8 wire 9004 and terminal 10 wire 9005.
On the instruments:
Blue 18 way connector terminal 4 wire 9004 and terminal 2 wire 9005.
I doubt the cluster is at fault, can you get someone with Peugeot Planet to test the cluster / scan the car?
#26: Re: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: MrrNoName, Location: UKPosted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 5:09 pm ---- at a quick glance the startup looks pretty normal apart from the stop light.
cant check tonight but if you want il start mine up tomorrow and list exactly what lights come on which key turn so you know if any more other than the stop light arnt comming on turn two

#29: Re: Instrument Panel / Speedo / Dashboard Lights Author: -Dave-, Location: North ManchesterPosted: Mon Jan 31, 2011 5:16 pm ---- Click on His video again, On the top it says he has uploaded two video's, Check out the other one lol.

Hey, yeah that would be great if you could, Id really appreciate it
Thanks mate!
NOTE: except the handbrake light if its applied, and Airbag light for a few seconds ( if the key is turned from position 2 to position 3 quickly, the airbag light hasnt had chance to go out yet)
probs what made lee think you had a airbag fault initially
EDIT: just had a look at your video again, looks like your oil and stop light arnt working

Thats great, cheers for doing that mate.
Right... better get learning how to solder then!
