It's time to bite the bullet and have a go at giving my x reg gti a service by myself..like they say you can only learn through doing, and copying all the how to threads!!

couple of questions though if somebody could help before i go to eurocarparts and buy all the items

1. believe i need 5w40 oil is that correct, also does it matter what brand oil it is as they only have valvoline branded and i have never heard of it.

2. the oil filter they recommend is either a mann for £6.72 or a guttmann for £4.20. same again will either do or am i best trying to get one from peugeot.

3. air filters. was going to get a k&n one, not expecting it to give me any performance increase but is it better for my car than a standared peugeot one or the guttmann/bosch ones for £8.04/11.40 at ecp.

4. anybody know where the fuel filter is off the top of there head. the how to guide says its near the wheel arch but somebody posted it is not there on the gti. not had a chance to look yet but hopefully somebody can give me a heads up as not really got a clue when it comes to anything mechanical.

cheers for any advice, off to get the parts in a hour so any advice will be greatly recieved!!!!

i got a fuel filter for my old gti but there was no fuel filter there, if you look under the car toward the front of the fuel tank you should see one if not then all gti's are the same and the filter is in the tank itself and no need to clean

1. Yes the oil you need is 5w40 and its up to you on brand of oil really but ll i can say is that i use mobil1 its expensive but since i serviced mine with it it feels much better, also i use 0w40 a its more readily available i found 5w40 hard to get hold of?

2. Oil filter i just went to my local car parts place and got one im sure brand on oil filter doesnt make much difference, just make sure when you put it on you put a bit of oil round the seal to help it fit and make sure it is the right fit for your car

3. Air filters i cant really speak on as im on an induction kit but i believe from what people have told me the k&n ones are good, sure someone on here is selling a k&n panel filter new and unused so may be able to get that at the same price as what you was going to pay for a normal one so would be worth trying it out.

4 If i remember correctly the fuel filter is built into the engine, may not be the case with yours being an older gti but im unsure on this.

Get a genuine oil filter from Peugeot, they're not particulary expensive.
I had a K&N air filter in my GTi, not a huge difference really. I just use an original paper filter now.
Oil use Total Quartz something or other, I'll find you a link in a min.

as for the oil i am on a time limit as got someone coming down to hold my hand while i do it so got to get it now Smile . ecp only seem to do valvoline 5ltr for £42.00. would it be just as eay to get the other oil from halfords etc for not too much difference in price.

Oil from Halfords is usually overpriced.
Get 5 litres of Total Quartz online for under £30.

I had Castrol Edge Sport 0w40 oil before I used Total 5w40, the engine was a lot happier with 5w40.

Sounded a bit tappy when cold with 0w40.

i have not had any complaints from mine running on 0w40, although im driving a gti180 not that that should make much difference i wouldnt of thought, and i go to a place called majrona karparts for my oil and filter its on the main road into blackburn next to tesco express and st.wilfrids school if you know where that is? cost me bout £35 for my oil and a couple of quid for a filter.

I live in cherry tree but not there most of the time as im in the army so based in north yorkshire but try and get there most weekends.

Where abouts in darwen i used to go over all the time as my mate lives just on the outskirts of darwen near the old darwen vale school.

1) Get some Total Quartz 9000 delivered from AEP Direct.
2) Get an oil filter from AEP Direct
3) K&N panel filter is fine
4) The fuel filter on an X reg GTi is behind the sill at the side of the fuel tank.
