#1: Oil in coolant bottle :( Author: deanparkr, Location: United KingdomPosted: Fri Feb 04, 2011 1:10 pm ---- Took my 206 - (2002 1.4 56k miles) for its yearly service today only to get a call back very shortly advising that oil has been spotted in the coolant bottle.
After some discussion we decided not to continue the service as oil in the coolant bottle would appear to be a major problem with the head gasket.
With the car returned we have done some more investigation and while there seems to be oil residue in the coolant bottle there is no "milky" texture in the oil dipstick / oil cap.
I was under the impression after reading threads on this forum in the past that head gasket failure = oil in watter bottle *and* milky white texture in the oil.
The car has been running completely fine, it hasnt been loosing any water the temperature sits just below 90c as it always has.
The garage are suggesting head gasket replacement at cost of £800. However, I am left wondering if the head gasket really is a major problem given that only the one sympton is being displayed.
Is it possible for oil to get in the expansion bottle by any other means than the head gasket? Are there any other ways to test for head gasket failure?

but surely won't cost that much for the head gasket job to be done properly.

remember water and oil dont mix so even if the slightest bit of oil has got into the water tank it would rise to the surface and make the problem look alot worse than it is. i wouldnt worry about it till inless it starts showing major signs of head gasket. white smoke on start up and fluid loss is the key things to look for

As usual the garage is quick to recommend re-placement than any other action!
I'm just having trouble working out how severe the problem is when oil is in the coolant bottle. I dont know whether to have the car fully serviced at £200 ish or to hold onto the money towards head gasket replacement.
Tricky situation!

Are there any other things I should check or should I just have the service and continue as normal just incase it isnt the headgasket.
Someone mentioned a compression test - would that be worth doing?

Based on feedback here, i'll keep an eye on the bottle and find out if a compression test can be done.
I find talking to people on here much useful than people in the garage! If only 206info had its own garage!

#12: Re: Oil in coolant bottle :( Author: matt.handley, Location: kentPosted: Fri Feb 04, 2011 2:17 pm ---- i took mine in for the same problem a few weeks back, to a garage i use all the time, and i was told that my head gasket isnt on the way out, but that my head gasket was replaced a few years vack and it can take up to five years for the oil to circulate around the engine.
