#1: 206 GTI HDI FAP HELP ! Author: peterh, Location: Lincolnshire PostPosted: Mon Feb 07, 2011 3:47 am
    ----
Hi all,
i'm looking for some help / advice. i'm new to the forum and to the world of 206's. I bought privately only 2 weeks ago a 206 gti hdi 1.6 110hp, it is a fantastic car but it the two weeks of ownership it has hardly been on the road.
It started on the way home with the unblock fuel filter message I assumed this was the fuel, I had lots to learn.
i googled the problem and discovered the fap system which i new nothing about. The tank was almost empty so I bought from my local dealer £100 worth of liquid gold and refilled the tank, resulting in no change.. a friend plugged into the car and it showed the fuel cap sensor had failed another £65 and still no change tried driving for half an hour in 3rd gear 3000rpm and normal driving for 30 mins but still the same message.
the performance seems fine but it does appear to be thirsty returning around 35 mpg. also on switching the car off the fan runs on for 5 mins is this related? is there anything else I can do? before I loose all faith? I've been told i can remove and clean the filter but cant even see it on the car? is it near the manifold. will it have to go to Peugeot for more expense? Im really struggling to stay posotive but love the car.
any help/ advice very much apprecaited.

Needs to got to pug to be plugged to tell it the fluid has been topped up and then a forced regen of the fap, then all should be fine, not sure on costs though

If the fan is going when you stop the car is regenerating the filter this is normal.
Do you do alot of small trips if so that will block the filter quicker mine now only gets used for long trips and it doesnt regen that often and is used everyday. I also seviced the car and it seems to have made a difference.

They should have cleared the fault codes when topping up the fluid.

Your MPG will drop quite a bit during regeneration.

The FAP is directly after the turbo and can be removed and steam cleaned from what I've heard.

Hi,
Thanks for the fast and helpful replies. i've been trying to keep the costs down and did the fluid top up and other work myself. The car will be used mainly for 12 miles each way daily trip to work and occasional weekend work, wandered if it is worth trying to clean the filter out, or best to take to pug to have everything reset etc. thanks again.

I have the same problem, dealer says I need FAP replacing at a cost of around £700 - £750 notes!!! I looked around and have found a small firm near me that will replace the FAP with a straight pipe and reprogram the ECU so that it never knew there was a FAP, mpg will improve and i'll never need worry about it again. Price......... £450, lots cheaper than reaplacing through a stealer and more peace of mind.

If you can get the filter out i've read that it can be steam cleaned then once dry put back on the car, the other way is to take it out some people literally just remove the filter and leave it like that no remap or anything and still no fault codes.

From what ive read. you can clean yours because this is all pug will do. give you a recon one which has been cleaned.

not sure what to use and how but i cant see how you could go far wrong.

as for the fuild i think you need pug to tell the brain that is had been fuild back up. imo i would try clean your filter. then book it in for an half hour to do the dig on it and i would hope it sould be sweet.

touch wood ive not had any problems with mine but i will be going down get rid of it and map the old girl but will also need to fit a better clutch/flywheel while your at it.

You can fill the fluid up yourself, then just go onto the settings with PP and tell the ECU its been filled up.

Or you can smash the middle out of the FAP, and fill the tank with diesel [bodge job] Laughing

Peter I have exactly the same. The warning and beep on every start and when read it showed the fuel cap sensor. I replaced this and Lee read and reset all my faults. Still the warning comes up. It's being topped up this weekend and the snap on kit my mate has can also reset the counters (according to him). If not I'll get it topped up and get Lee to reset them on Peugeot Planet. I'll let you know how I get on. I thought I was reading one of my own threads to start with!

Yeah you might be able to reset it with that, I know a few Sealey code readers can do it.

I'll be coming back again Lee as I need a new unused key coding. Apparently Planet can do it so a first for us both!

Really?

I didn't know you could code them Confused

I've been doing a bit of research as I was tempted to buy the kit myself but doubt I'd recoup my spend back. On another forum I was reading you can do it. Apparently you need all the keys requiring coding and the car and Planet talks you through it. (apparently)!

coded many keys on planet and yeah it is a piece of cake. will only program virgin keys and not second hand ones. you need all the keys available and the transponder code, can get this from peugeot at a cost .

if you need any advise Lee give me a shout, i can talk you through it

hi,
thats great thanks for all the replies, pleased im not alone with the problem. I'm going to take the plunge and take it to the dealer to reset and force regen, i hope it doesnt need anything more as im almost financially drained after purchasing and fixing the problems so far. also since i changed the cap sensor Im struggling to get fuel in, ie it keeps cutting the pump off, I think it is to do with the rubber connector between the neck and tank which appeared to be far too long i may have it twisted, any one else had problems? thanks again. will let you know the out come.

Hi all,
Just taken the car to have it plugged in to reset everything and been told that it has a fault in the glow plug circuit and therfore it will not regenerate as the glow plugs are used in the regeneration? aparently it needs to glow plugs at £60 before they can proceed? any one heard of this?

#23: Re: 206 GTI HDI FAP HELP ! Author: paulrushton, Location: Huddersfield PostPosted: Wed Feb 09, 2011 10:36 am
    ----
Not heard if that. Usually only one or two glow plugs go so surprised all need replacing.

#24: Re: 206 GTI HDI FAP HELP ! Author: Seabook PostPosted: Wed Feb 09, 2011 10:37 am

yes, you will need to glowplug during regeneration.

during FAP regeneration, the filter will need higher exhuast gas temperature to burn off the soot.

turning on glow plug, by-pass intercooler...etc are one of the way to achieve this.

Hi all,
just a quick update... I fitted the new glow plugs and took for a drive still the same unblock filter message. a friend then suggested a local garage may be able to help, a quick run to them and they plugged into it using snap on diagnostics which appears to be capable, (much to the operators surprise) to be able to reset everything and do regenerations. 30 mins on and the message was no more, the car runs better and on a 100 mile run yesterday returned 54 mpg and even showed 57 for a while. so touch wood... all is good.. just need to do a few more jobs, ie when i trapped the fuel hose into the tank when changing the sensor and now it takes 10 mins to put £20in, and also some clunking to investigate at the front os wheel, but all in all much happier thanks again for all the help...

Hi,

I've been having a similar problem with mine, anti-pollution fault message. The codes were read at my local peugeot dealer, and the glow plugs need replacing as they are preventing regeneration.

peterh, did you mean all new glow plugs for £60? My peugeot dealer quoted £475 to replace my glow plugs as its supposedly a difficult job!

I didn't let them change the glowplugs, this was a couple of months ago and the (anti-pollution fault) message has come back now.

Thanks

Hi,
Yes got all my glow plugs for £60 from a local motor factors, a handy friend of mine fitted them. since being plugged in and the faults clearing but i did only have the unblock filter message, all is well and the fuel economy is around 10mpg better. the only thing i now get is the occasional fan run on but im told that is still normal?

Seems the dodgy glow plugs are common in relation to this then as mine also need replacing.

Would love to know how bad they are to change as i'll be changing them myself Smile
