#1: Gearbox replacement??? Author: mikey101, Location: Coventry PostPosted: Tue Feb 15, 2011 6:21 am

Hi people. 6 months ago the release bearing on the clutch went... Clutch was replaced... Last week I heard again the similar noise, and it was release bearing again so the garage fixed it under warranty (2 year parts warranty)... The garage are now telling me the release bearing went AS A RESULT of a faulty gearbox and it could be a matter of time till it happens again...

Does this seem right?

And also I have a Peugeot 206 1.6 Xsi 2003 and have found the following gearbox:

EBAY GEARBOX

I've called the guy and it came from a 206 Xsi on a year 2000... Should it fit???

I know its a difficult one but any help MUCH appreciated!!

Thankss

there isnt much inside the gearbox which could cause the clutch release bearing to go. it slides up and down the input shaft of the gearbox but doesn't actually go inside the casting so i cant see how the gearbox caused it, to be honest it sounds like the garage trying to put the blame on the car rather than bad fitment. get them to repair it and try it again, if it happens again then it needs looking into. i personally don't buy the gearbox caused it though if it goes into all the gears fine then it doesn't need replacing

Thanks giveitsomebar. Sorry I forgot to mention I dropped it off yesterday and they called me today saying its ready so just waiting for my lift to go garage. They stated that it is still a bit noisy but I just gotta see how bad it is... Yeh I wondered if anyone would honestly think that the gearbox (or something in it) would cause the release bearing to go. Because when I had the fault , I would put it in neutral upon idle and there would be the noise of the release bearing and then when I press the clutch it would go away and so on. So how is that the cause of the gearbox! and yes mate the gearbox is as smooth as and always has been.

I have the same problem. When I press a pedal clutch, low noise goes away, but when I release a pedal, noise comes back. In foreign language forum people said that is problem with gearbox and with bearing of initial roller in it. So I thought that in the future I will change used gearbox because to fix this problem is very expensive. Half of price is outgoing and ingoing of gearbox.
Sometimes I must push first gear and sometimes I turn back gear not in first time. But this is problem with gearbox too.

In my case there is a little bit of judder, but I did'not take so much attention that I feel it strongly.
Must I feel it strongly? And how this judder can cause components of car in the future?
When I am in a stopped position and accelerate pedal to 1k rpm and steering wheel make some judder. But with little experience I think that is pillow's (bag in sides of engine) fault.

I don't know correct name of these components.
They keep engine in one position and do'not let to move and to judder.

Yes. Different cars have different types.

Hi all, no juddering for me btw. I got the car back from the garage, and they confirmed that a new gearbox is due... Unfortunate but what can you do. The noise is that one of the bearings or something like that has worn within the gearbox and it is causing this noise. It is not dangerous nor does it have to be fixed immediately, and performance is not affected, BUT its my car and MUST fix it! lol. So after shopping around for the day for quotes, a trusted garage from where I lowered my car has got further contacts who will RECONDITION the gearbox on Friday for £195 + £150 labour charge from the garage to take it out and fit it back in... So for £350 a gearbox as good as new with 6 months warranty is where it doesn't sound too bad! And i have got a new full clutch kit for free today too, so by Saturday should be good as new is when I will pick it up after dropping off Friday morning.

I keep you all updated, but just hoping this £350 will be all worth it and hope the noise goes away Sad The garage that I got the car back FROM today were 100% sure the noise was the gearbox... They opened it up etcc and inspected it fully, and I have read on forums that if it is NOT the release bearing from the clutch, it is almost certainly the gearbox. Fingers crossed!
