Does it need to be connected to an original radio for the time etc to display?

No, if you fit an aftermarket stereo then the cd and radio display will say "out" instead of the current track etc but it will displayed on the hu instead.

this one must be dead then, it illuminates but nothing on the display.

I did a fix for it, check the howto guide. Or you could cover postage to me and back and for a fiver ill do it if you dont have a soldering iron etc

I did what dj said, although when mine was broken it wasn't illuminating at all.

I did your fix on it but still nothing on the display, the bulbs illuminate fine, saying that though ive only tested it by wiring it to a battery.

The display needs to be connected to the car for it to actually display anything Wink
