car: 2000 1.1 lx preplexed

Basically i had flat battery, went to charge it and had my charger on 24V by mistake. Connected it or around 20 seconds before realising my mistake!

Now i charged it on 12V to get it going and goes fine. Only thing is, fan wont go off and interior light/radio don't work.

No fuses blown :S

did you not disconnect the negative terminal of the car before charging the battery?!?!

Should be fine, i did it with my battery, also depends on how long you did it for?

didnt charge it, just boosted it. I think should be fine yes, but i cant explain constant fan and lack of interior light

are you certain the fuses arnt blown, sometimes they can look good when they arnt. also have you tried disconnecting it again and letting the power drain out of the systems before reconnecting it. oh i thought your first post said you were charging it?

99% it will be the fuses, a fuse' purpose is to break when there's a surge in the circuit im sure this what has happened, get a multi meter on each end of the fuses one by one, now it could be time consuming but auto electricans charge upwards of £50 per hour so could be a costly bill just to find out its a 9pence fuse

i have checked all the fuses, admitably not with multimeter, but removed and visually inspected everyone Sad all fine

dude!! seriously visual checks fail! i had this problem and there was a slight break in one and it was near on impossible to see Smile

will be getting the multimete rout later, do i just take them out and do a continuity test on the fuse then?

Fuses usually blow via amps, this is voltage

There a relays and obv you radio only like 12v may have FUBAR'ed them as there electronics in them, could have fried the ECU and BSI

how can i check a relay? Im not too worried about radio, just wish i could get fan to go off.

yes i disconnected battery for 15 mins and as soon as touched terminals, it came to life. could i have fried a sensor?

#14: Re: How much damage have I done? Author: Mattie-RS, Location: A Track near you ;) PostPosted: Tue Mar 01, 2011 8:48 am

possibly, either a sensor, relay or ECU

What year is your pug Sheedy?

Possible ECU/BSI damage am afraid.

You could try a BSI reset and hope for the best I suppose.

Ah, I don't know if you can reset on non-multiplexed BSI.

if i were you i would leave it for a while and see if it goes off. it it doesnt, leave it unplugged over night and see in the morning, sounds like rubbish i know but its worked for me before. I had a 307 once that went nuts, indicators flashing, wouldnt unlock, then unlocked itself etc, left it overnight doing insane things, and it was fine in the morning, never had trouble since. it might be that if you leave it for a few hours the fan will go off? hard to say though because i dont know whats causing it to be on in the first place.

I think he means dis-connect the battery overnight.
Worth a try.

yeh i mean leave the battery disconnected over night to let every capacitor etc flatten right down

You've more likely only 'fried' the fan relay, find the fusebox and unplug the relays one by one until the fan stops, the relay that you unplug and causes the fan to stop is the one that needs renewing.

However testing it while your finger is in the housing isn't a good idea. Just ask Ed Razz

Doubt it. The relay is controlled by the ECU.

someone friend their ECU n BSI by pulling fuzes when the car was live the other day on here, i think it was £1500 for both. that was plexed tho, and as yours is pre-plexed it might be less hopefully?

could send it off to get tested and fixed? or could get a replacement that comes with keys etc?

probs aint gunna be cheap tho man Sad

I often worry about your obsession with forklifts.

Do you have one at home as well? Laughing

If the fan is on even with the keys out, then its a relay thats f****d and stuck on the 'on' position

Ordinarily yes, but his interior light is not working either and what are the
chances of the fan relay mechanicaly failing at the same time as this whole incident.
If the relay coil was burned it would fail open contacts not closed.
ECU/BSI are powered-up even with the keys out I think.

Hope you're right though, for his pockets' sake.

Didn't read the whole thread tbh, just read the bit about the fan been constantly on.

I've blown a relay before where its given power out constantly.

Should just get the car plugged in and see what comes up, saves a lot of f*****g about

No but we have saved one from the scrap heap last year to use as a workshop runaround, its a long walk to the vending machine / canteen / toilet / other end of the warehouse Wink

Very few I can punch at the moment as 99% of them are still under warranty Laughing

Sort of, the other engineer is getting on ( meant to be retiring in less then a year ) & had replacement joints fitted in a hip & knee, he finds it a struggle to walk any distance so its easier for him to just use the camel.

It looks pretty smart for a 17 year old forklift as we done it up a bit & painted it Cool

Hi Sheedy,
As Lee said it really is better to have the car scanned for diagnostics before you start messing
with ECU/BSI etc. Have you contacted BBA? If you describe the symptoms to them they might
have a better idea wether its worth sending either one to them for testing.
Then, they can advise on possible repair or replacement with a reconditioned unit if it turns-out to be the problem.
