Cold start idle rpm

#1: Cold start idle rpm Author: Davels, Location: Norfolk PostPosted: Tue Mar 08, 2011 7:18 am

Hi all,

How fast should a 2.0l idle when cold?
My car starts fine and idles at 1100to1200 for around 60 seconds and lowers to 1000 where i get the misfire/judder (my 3 cylinder thread I have all bored you with)
Should it be idling faster for longer to allow the engine to warm up a bit?

I'm thinking that maybe it's just a case the car trying to idle normally to quickly in which case would it be a faulty idle control valve/stepper motor?

My first car use to stall when the manual choke was put in too early I'm assmuming this is nearly happening to my engine.

800 is the usual (after the initial higher idle)

Mine does the same from cold, around 1200 then drops slowly to around 1000 ( car is now shaking like you on a dirt track) and then eventually drops to 600-650rpm.Iv'e read on here its meant to be on 750rpm or 800rpm, and thats what I'm trying change.Have you seen my last suggestion on the 3cyl topic?

Really? My car Idles at that when warm but this takes a good 10 minutes of idling or 3-5 minutes of driving to get down to this.
I thought the car was supposed to idle higher for at least a few minutes while things were warming up.

From what i have said would you say the Ilde control unit is faulty should be replaced?

The annoying thing about this ruddy problems is that the car is displaying no fault codes whatsover and only throws an EML when the car has acutally stuttered down to 3 pots.

@Twincam, yeah I have seen your posts but sounds tricky. I'm hoping maybe a straight off replacment of the AIS/idle control valve may fix things. Tis 70 to 80 quid for a new one though which is a lot for a "trial and error" change Sad

Mine goes up very briefly to 1000, then drops to just above 800 almost immediately!

Depends how cold the engine is.

Mine is better in warmer months. Although the problem is still their from first start, just a lot less severe.
For my problems I'm talking of sub 5degrees ambient temp.

Maybe there is someone on the forum that may have a spare ( 100% working ) ICV that we could use as a trial instead. I'd also prefer to just swop out parts to new ones, but the costs are mounting up.I also still have my entire suspension to do as well i.e wishbones, droplinks, possibly track rod ends. And then a cambelt and waterpump change followed finally by new tyres.
So, is there is anyone that has a spare ICV that Davel or I could use as a test.I assure you I can be trusted to return it or, if it works, will pay for it.

I think I have a spare ICV. Won't be able to check until the weekend though.

if its running on 3 its not going to idle correct anyway, but ye 1200 is then when warm (80c) on mine 800rpm

@Twincam go ahead mate, fingers crossed Chris has one to try and its the answer. I have a air temp sensor coming so that is another thing to try. at least that was under 15quid delivered.

Sounds like our cars are in sync, i've just had the second front wishbone changed after the droplinks and passenger side being done last year. Also had both top mounts and two new front tyres.
At the end of the month i have my service, cambelt and water pump change booked in as well lol.
