Sorry about this, you probably get this question all the time. It looks like my head gasket could be on its way out, i found oil mixed in with the water, so i emptied out the water bottle, filled it back up and a few days later there is abit more oil in there,
This is what the cap looks like when u take it off:

does this sound/look like the head gasket is on its way out? and also is it and easy fix?.

Depends upon your mechanical ability, if you feel confident to tackle the job and armed with a haynes manual then go ahead. It certainly is a diy job.

Skimming is not always necessary and is usually only needed where the engine has been cooked (severely overheated)........go ahead and do the job yourself, there are many on here who have successfully replaced their own h/gaskets..
ps.........It's imperative that the block and head faces are perfectly clean before re-assembly to ensure you don't end up doing the job again!

They quoted me £675 for the lot.
Was cheaper for me to just swap the engine lol.

How can they know that the head would need skimming without first checking it for flatness after it was removed?................i suspect that some garages play on the 'skimming' story and charge for skimming when they dont in fact skim the head, after all, how would you know if it had been skimmed or not?

Not necessarily, it only means that the head gasket had failed between a cylinder and a waterway, hence the cylinder filling with water.
What i meant was that i suspect some garages play on the story that the head MUST be skimmed every time a head gasket fails.........and that is simply not true. Last edited by panason1c on Tue Mar 15, 2011 8:57 am; edited 1 time in total

They are a pretty good garage near me, and wouldnt have done it if it didnt need it. Ive had work done there before and when i went in they were cheaper than quoted as they didnt have to do everything they said they would.
Just wish they would give me a quote they promised for the clutch cable lol. Been waiting 2 days!
