First thing is that i think the alternator is gone! battery never holds charge once in vehicle and there is alternating current, as in the clock keeps flashing very quickly, (it should be on or off right) the battery light is also constantly on. The second problem is that doing 10-15 mph then pulling the handbrake up the car locks on and bounces with a heavy clunk! thanks iain

i never had a capacitor on my sound system, so when it was on loud the light would flash< slowly> could that be the reason its dying?

If the engine dies the alternator isnt charging enough. should run at 14v when its on.
Also do you have an alarm? Anything that could be shorting? May be that there is something draining the battery when the engine is off.

More to the point why would you want to try it? My car has a pedal that I press to slow the car down at that speed. Prevents the shoes from ripping apart and twisting springs within the drum.

Author: iainlovatt, Posted: Tue Mar 22, 2011 10:29 am ---- i have rear drums, it started doing it when moving off from a junction if I had used the handbrake once stopped, but for it to make the noise, you put it under strain ie by pulling the handbrake slowly at 10mph, the cars stops but bounces a couple of times with some hefty clunks!!

Test the battery first thing in a morning when the car has been stood all night, and you will get a more accurate reading of the battery charge. If you look in the beginners guide to a 206 I put a list of voltage vs charge
If your pulling the handbrake up while driving then the rear goes down, so it could be anything from brakes to suspension to just been one of them things. If your worried just get the brakes checked.
Start the car and put a multimeter on the terminals, a healthy alternator will make the reading about 13.5-13.7 volts

cheers mate appreciate the advice, could it be down to the servo? it likes to make a hiss noise every now and again?

Sorry if it sounds like I'm preaching to you here, but you need to understand the physics at work and this may help you find the problem. The handbrake is designed to hold a stationary wheel. It does this by moving levers within the drum on each wheel, which in turn force the brake shoes outwards so that the bind onto the drum. Holding the shoes in place is a series of clips and springs. Once the wheel is locked up, then it causes drag which would mean the wheel is trying to stay in one place while the vehicle chassis is still moving forward. It would be normal for the suspension at the rear of the car to go down, but that will eventually hit a limit of movement and then something else would need to move. This would normally be the suspension mounts. The suspension is designed to move up and down, by forcing it backwards and forwards you are likely to put pressure on it that it wasn't designed to take, and eventually something will give. If you are lucky then it will just be a rubber bush that is worn, if you are very unlucky, then it could be a bolt ripping out of the chassis. Hopefully this will help a bit and give you a chance to find the fault yourself. Like Lee said, get the brakes checked but I would also ask them to check the suspension at the same time.
If you take your drum off this is how it should look. This is the O/S but N/S is similar (I always photograph the location of the springs and levers before working on brake drums to ensure correct refitment)

The clunk when you apply the handbrake is likely due to u/s rear subframe to body mountings.
