#1: This Months Issues, by MrrNoName lol Author: MrrNoName, Location: UKPosted: Thu Mar 24, 2011 4:19 am ---- ok so, this month ive had an annoying problem develop,
2001 reg (y) peugeot 206 1.4 8v petrol
1) when im driving along and clutch in to change gear the revs drop very slowly and pause at 2000rpm for a few seconds before comming to idle. once they are at idle they are steady, no fluctuation, it holds the idle perfectly.
2) when im driving along and i am stopping at traffic lights, when i clutch in and brake the revs 'bounce' up and down before comming to idle.
this only happens when im clutched in and braking to come to a complete stop. if im just operating the brake while in gear they dont bounce, if im just clutched in and not braking, they dont bounce but take forever to drop down to idle.
3) sometimes during problem 2 the 'bouncing' revs bounce so far below idle before they settle i.e as low as 200 revs that the engine gracefully cuts out, no warning.
when driving in gear the engines fine, pulls hard, sounds fine
no codes stored, no EML.
the revving problem is the same whether the engine is hot or cold, the bouncing rev problem when braking is worse when the engines warm (maybe this is because the automatic choke isnt on when the engines warm so the idles lower so its easier to cut out?)
i think that its probably got something to do with the throttle body or one of the sensors around that area, idle control valve, MAP, throttle position sensor? maybe its a mechanical probably and the throttle body isnt closing fully when i let my foot off causing the revs to keep artifically high? at quick inspection it looks like its working fine, but you never know lol
opinions greatly appreciated people Last edited by MrrNoName on Thu Mar 24, 2011 4:22 am; edited 1 time in total

#3: Re: This Months Issues, by MrrNoName lol Author: CD-B3, Location: Salisbury / New ForestPosted: Thu Mar 24, 2011 4:22 am ---- Sounds similar to the problem I had in the GTi.
I cleaned the ICV, throttle body, swapped the MAP sensor, new lambda sensor & bled the coolant system.
#4: Re: This Months Issues, by MrrNoName lol Author: ma.langan, Location: Leyland, LancashirePosted: Thu Mar 24, 2011 4:50 am ---- sounds like idle control valve...
but before ya go spending ya money get a compressor and blast air through the engine bay fuse box, might have water in there. i thought my idle control valve had gone once but it was water int fuse box. blasted it out and it stopped straight away!

#6: Re: This Months Issues, by MrrNoName lol Author: Golfguy206, Location: PeterboroughPosted: Thu Mar 24, 2011 4:56 am ---- i say its the idle control valve - its having trouble coming down from speed and settling, hence Idle control valve.
#7: Re: This Months Issues, by MrrNoName lol Author: tomd0801754, Location: MoscowPosted: Thu Mar 24, 2011 5:06 am ---- I'd also say ICV. Give it a clean and see what its like then.
#8: Re: This Months Issues, by MrrNoName lol Author: Rob2859, Location: HalifaxPosted: Thu Mar 24, 2011 5:33 am ---- try the battery too. When my battery goes flat it struggles to catch idle when the revs drop. sometimes it bounces back up sometimes it just cuts out.
#9: Re: This Months Issues, by MrrNoName lol Author: LWhite92, Location: Chelmsford, EssexPosted: Thu Mar 24, 2011 6:11 am ---- Similar problem with mine. Everytime it idled the revs just carried on dropping till engine died, as u said, with no warning. Cleaned out ICV and been fine ever since (touch wood) =]
#10: Re: This Months Issues, by MrrNoName lol Author: MrrNoName, Location: UKPosted: Thu Mar 24, 2011 7:39 am ---- it idle's fine, it almost seems as if braking somehow drags the revs below idle, it never stalls unless your braking, it might be an idle control valve problem though because the revs do drop really slowly
#11: Re: This Months Issues, by MrrNoName lol Author: MrrNoName, Location: UKPosted: Thu Mar 24, 2011 9:29 am ---- whats the best thing to clean the ICV with?
#12: Re: This Months Issues, by MrrNoName lol Author: Kersh, Location: Bridgnorth, Nr WolverhamptonPosted: Thu Mar 24, 2011 10:16 am ---- carb cleaner!
#13: Re: This Months Issues, by MrrNoName lol Author: MrrNoName, Location: UKPosted: Thu Mar 24, 2011 10:47 am ---- like this?
#14: Re: This Months Issues, by MrrNoName lol Author: Kersh, Location: Bridgnorth, Nr WolverhamptonPosted: Thu Mar 24, 2011 10:50 am ---- yup
#15: Re: This Months Issues, by MrrNoName lol Author: MrrNoName, Location: UKPosted: Thu Mar 24, 2011 10:52 am ---- do i just spray it into the bit where the pole moves in and out? lol
#16: Re: This Months Issues, by MrrNoName lol Author: Kersh, Location: Bridgnorth, Nr WolverhamptonPosted: Thu Mar 24, 2011 10:56 am ---- yeah just blast it all up in there, try cleaning your MAP sensor as well while your there, cant hurt
#17: Re: This Months Issues, by MrrNoName lol Author: MrrNoName, Location: UKPosted: Thu Mar 24, 2011 11:02 am ---- do i clean that in the same way? what does the MAP do?
#18: Re: This Months Issues, by MrrNoName lol Author: Davels, Location: NorfolkPosted: Thu Mar 24, 2011 11:09 am ---- I have a MAP and ICV for sale in the FS section if you need cheapish second hand replacments. The parts have only covered 50K and were replaced when trying to find an idle problem(very different to yours) new parts made no difference.
** EDIT **
Acutally scrap that, forgot to check what car you had first. The bit's I have are for a 2.0 petrol engine, sorry Last edited by Davels on Thu Mar 24, 2011 11:12 am; edited 1 time in total
#19: Re: This Months Issues, by MrrNoName lol Author: Kersh, Location: Bridgnorth, Nr WolverhamptonPosted: Thu Mar 24, 2011 11:12 am ---- the map peasures the manifold air pressure, either way its good to clean it
just clean it in the same way, carb cleaner
#20: Re: This Months Issues, by MrrNoName lol Author: MrrNoName, Location: UKPosted: Mon Jun 20, 2011 1:58 am ---- just to finish this thread, took the car to pug, they admit the faults and say they have seen them on other cars before but have no idea what causes them and I can either start randomly swapping parts or put up with it lol
#21: Re: This Months Issues, by MrrNoName lol Author: JE_180, Location: WiltshirePosted: Mon Jun 20, 2011 2:01 am ---- That's a bit of a s**t solution... they've seen it before but doesn't know what causes it... lol great.
#22: Re: This Months Issues, by MrrNoName lol Author: MrrNoName, Location: UKPosted: Mon Jun 20, 2011 2:24 am ---- yup, they originally tried to charge me the diag fee and 2 and a half hours labour just to tell me that they had no idea why its happening. after hours of discussion (lol) they dropped the charges and let me leave.
Their master fitter even said to me that its pointless bringing a car in without the engine management light on because if its not flagging up a code they wont be able to diagnose it. How bad is that! not all faults show up on the EML!
EDIT: first the dealers told me that these *faults* were designed into the ECU to aid with pollution and that the *stepper motor* was designed to drop the revs in uneven bouncy steps...
(i know the stepper motor aids with pollution but im pretty sure its not designed to make the cars revs bounce all over the place lol...)
after they realised I knew how an engine worked they quickly changed that story... LOL
