i wouldn't trust re-threading the hubs hole though.....

There bolts not nuts . Did you have 4 in each wheel before having your tyres changed? If you did the they probably cross threaded one when they fitted your tyres, So they should fix it.
You will need to change the hub and wheel bearing or get a complete second hand hub assembly and swap it over yourself. I would try running a thread cleaner/tap through it first and get get a new bolt and try that.
