#1: CD's Mazda MX5 Mk1 *Update 28/03/12 New Suspension* Author: CD-B3, Location: Salisbury / New ForestPosted: Sat Apr 02, 2011 1:06 pm ---- Picked up my new toy today.
It's a 1996 Mk1 MX5 1.6
Really pleased with it, but as you can see it needs some work doing.
Picked it up from quite literally the centre of London. Wasn't very fun with a LWB Defender & trailer.
Plans are:
Full respray, dent removal and rust treated. Not sure on what colour, for now as it is in BRG.
New soft top. - Bought a black one for £50
Cheap radio (anyone selling one?)
New interior or re-trim the drivers seat.
New ariel
Only modifications to it are a MilTek cat back exhaust, sounds really nice, and lowered suspension (unsure on the brand)
Not bad for £440 eh? Last edited by CD-B3 on Wed Mar 28, 2012 4:29 am; edited 7 times in total

Is there no-where else to put the front registration plate as where it is (i know its standard for this mk) is horrendous it would look better down the front somewhere.

There are a couple of holes in the bumper lower than where the plate currently is.
Maybe a square one offset in the lower corner would look better.

Yea the square offset one like you see on RX8 and S2000's sometimes would look sweet. It could turn into a very nice car if a fair amount is spent. Are you planning on keeping it or just gonna do it up a bit and then sell it on?

Planning on giving Mazda a call tomorrow to find out the service history.
I'll find out that too.
Yeah it needs a lot of work on the body but mechanically its very good.

Really drives very well, can't fault the gearbox or engine
No going to keep it green, another colour would be too much hassle.

#34: Re: CD's Summer Project - Mazda MX5 Mk1 Author: CD-B3, Location: Salisbury / New ForestPosted: Thu Apr 14, 2011 7:51 am ---- Went to an upholsterer to get the new soft top repaired this morning however they wanted it off the frame (roughly a 4 hour job to replace it) but he said it had shrunk, so even if he did repair it it would come undone again. So going to have to fork out £260 for a brand new one fitted
However good news on the new seats.
Had a long drive to Brighton last Saturday, seats and door cards were a bargain at £70. While I was there I asked how much for the door seal (Mazda wanted £85 for a new one!) the bloke said "If you want to remove it, have it"
I asked if he's selling the rear calipers, he said I could take them off, so I got my tools out and removed them. Asked him how much he wanted for them (they are in VGC with loads of life left on the pads) £10 he said!!!
So it was well worth the journey.
Sunday I removed the old soft top and seats, put the new seats in but I ran into a little problem.
No seatbelt mounting point on the new seat
So phoned up the guy I bought the seats from & he sent me the new seatbelts
Made a start cleaning up the rust on the rear arches, the drivers on is worse than it looked so both sides will be cutout & replacements welded in.
Starting to get expensive
No going to keep it green, another colour would be too much hassle.
Was going to say, you could save a pretty penny if you kept it green. Not to mention if you do the prep work yourself!
I wet-flatting....

gonna keep it for a summer toy then chris being as the cost is mounting?
Going to keep it for a year I think, and sell next summer.
MOT this week, then I'll be driving it once I have tax on the 1st May
A few updates.
New door cards fitted along with new seatbelts and seats.
Rusty arches cleaned up and a dab of paint.
Paint colour is wrong, but it's only temporary and looks better than grey primer from a distance.
Going to get the new arches welded in next week I think.

Part exchanging the old tatty seats with someone that reupholsters them. He's fitting a new soft top for £150

Getting the rear end out (when it's safe to do so) is brilliant fun and very controllable.
It seems to be quite thirsty though but that's compared to my 60mpg diesel.

I believe that he's got it in the booth this Saturday, and I'll get it back 10 days later. He's going to keep it to make sure there aren't any reactions in the paint and polish it all once it's hardened.

Yeah, sort of
He's painted a few cars for us, but I wouldn't call him a mate, he can be unreliable/very difficult to get hold of. But he does a good job.
The 205 had a full respray inside & out for £450.
My dad's Audi TT for £650ish.
Uncle's Mazda6 rear 1/4, boot and side for £450.
Get it cheaper if you do the prep work yourself. He said it would be around £900 in a different colour.

Borg Warner EFR 6255 or 6258
Intercooler kit
EV14 Injectors
Wideband
Decent tyres & new wheels.
Uprate the suspension (again )
Roll cage/bar
Brakes from a 1.8

The 88bhp engine I have already has a low compression.
I was advised to turbocharge this, rather than fit a 1.8 and charge that.
Seen a dual oil/coolant radiator that fits in the original bracket

Had a look thought this and older posts, the car is really nice, i thought you'd sold it back in the day, how come you kept hold of it?
Thanks
I tried selling it at the end of Autumn last year but no takers.
So I was going to try sell it again this summer but I'd still me making a massive loss as the mileage puts people off (144,000).

I've spent over £3k restoring it and will be spending another £3-4k tuning.
I can't really put a price on it.
